on our recent visit to the indo-bangla border, what we found was shocking.

we had been to to murshidabad,on the call of some ngo's and philanthropists.

the indo-bangla border is different from other borders. even though the 150 km long border is separated by man made fences, guarded by the dressed to kill personnel of bsf and bdr,the region is comparitively peacefull. the region, unlike the indo-pak border , the soldiers of both the nations are friendly to each other. many a times,we found soldiers of both sides playing carroms together, talking together etc. we came to know that, small amount of tradings also go between them. the marlbaro cigars and milkmaid tins, which the indians have a lot are very often traded to the banglas.

there are about half a dozen entry points ,which are legal, between the two nations. apart from these, there are about 17 illegal entry points called ghats. each year, these ghats are auctioned and ghat maliks buy them. the owner of each ghat set their own rate for the pass of items through these ghats.

there are agents who facillitate the pass of cattle, rice, sugar, phensedyl etc.

another thriving item of passage is girls and pimps. sex trade is a major bussiness here. there a major players-those with 10 to 15 girls under them to minor ones with 1-2 girls under them.

one such major player was leila bhila,a 45 year old.
she began as a rice smuggler,a later understood that the bsf personnel wont allow her to the bussines unless she provided the with free sex. the bdr personnel from the other side will also join them for free fun.
she eventually turned into sex trade, supplying both to bsf and bdr,bsf being her major customer. she said that she had 17 girls under her and promises that if the demand increases, she can arrange more.

girls in this field are those either:
1.tricked by those offering good jobs in mumbai, delhi etc
2.those whom are left by their husbands
3.those whom are married to 'agents' posing as wealthy business men.

on such was jayati, whom was left by her husband and she lives in her maternal house. she is the mother of three. her family don't know that she is in this business. she earns about rs 45000 per month and spends rs 2700 for her kids education alone. her children enjoys all facilities in life.

the agents or smugglers offer girls to bsf and bdr to allow the safe passage of goods.

the area was once filled with aids patients, however the use of condoms
has broght the no of aids patients to a lesser amount. there are several agents who sell these "raksha-kavachs" to the bsf personnels at a reasonable price. many of the agents also offer these along with the girls.

NEW DELHI is worried over the issue.
several counter-measures are under consideration.
one of them is the issueing of an all women battalion to the border

Thanks for the post. It is really sad state of affair there. I dont expect any change though in near future.

Apparently, these human smuggling routes stretch all the way till the Middle East.

This is very sad..Poverty can create such illness in society. Majority women are forced into prostitution because of poverty..

Well human trafficking is a supply and demand thing. Even the Europeans are unable to stop it. I watched a documentary about it recently on BBC (I think panorama), really heartbreaking.
What is the point of having a fence if you cant stop these things.

women battalion of what?army or bsf?

what counter measures will bangladesh take?

Quite an accurate assessment....these are some of the ills of society due to poverty and helplessness , unfortunately NGO's and Social workers , activists are our best hope for creating awareness and improving the ground situation...

Frankly I am surprised to read a truthful article by a BD national.

What happens is truly sad & needs correction. This method of ingress is most common. Almost all domestic help in the NCR are from BD. They possibly have used this method to gain entry aided by unscrupulous elements on the Indian side.

One feels sad to see humans exploited in this manner.
