Inks pact with State govt to conduct feasibility study

MUMBAI, NOVEMBER 16:

The Maharashtra government on Thursday entered into a tie-up with Virgin Hyperloop One for exploring the possibility of connecting Mumbai and Pune with hyperloop transportation system. The US-based company will conduct a preliminary study in the region.

According to a press statement issued by the company, it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) for identifying potential routes and for analysing the high-level economic impact and technical viability of hyperloop transportation solutions in India.

Phenomenal speed
With speeds two to three times faster than high-speed rail, and being fully autonomous, hyperloop technology can deliver a 300-km commute in under 20 minutes. Business tycoon Richard Branson and his Virgin Group are investors in the company.

The statement said that the company would work with its partners in the region and the PMRDA will help navigate the regulatory requirements and support the report with data.

The preliminary study is intended to analyse the applicability and benefits of hyperloop technology, identify high priority routes within the State based on demand analysis and socio-economic benefits.

“A hyperloop route requires high-density traffic to become viable as a means of rapid public transit. Mumbai and Pune, the most and seventh most populous cities in India respectively, have the potential to provide an optimal route with a high density,” said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in the statement.

“By reducing travel time to under 20 minutes, a hyperloop route will help intensify the connectivity between the metropolitan regions of Pune and Mumbai, transforming the two cities into India’s first and largest megapolis,” he added.

Huge potential
The company said in the statement said that looking at the present traffic scenario in Mumbai, Virgin Hyperloop One can reinvent and transform transportation in Maharashtra as it redefines speed with minimal time consumption.

A hyperloop solution could revolutionise the transport experience, it said.

It would take just 14 minutes to travel between Mumbai and Pune, a journey that currently takes up to three hours by car. It could also streamline airport connectivity, such as connecting Pune’s new Purandar Airport to the city center or Navi Mumbai International Airport to Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

It could look at connecting Nagpur, which is in the easternmost part of Maharashtra, with Mumbai and Pune to vastly improve passenger and freight transportation, the statement said. Managing Director (Middle East & India), Virgin Hyperloop One, Harj Dhaliwal said that his company is the only one in the world that has successfully built and tested the first full-scale hyperloop system.

With this report, the State government will be able to identify viable routes that link commercial and knowledge hubs dispersed throughout the region with greater mobility and unparalleled efficiency, he said in the statement.

‘Key facilitator’
“To coincide with the Digital India initiative and the pivotal role that technology will play in it, Virgin Hyperloop One can be a key facilitator,” said Nick Earle, SVP Global Field Operations, Virgin Hyperloop One.

“India has a proud track record of technological advancement by leapfrogging legacy solutions as illustrated by the successful national rollout of 3G and 4G networks. Hyperloop represents a leapfrog opportunity which will enable a dramatic reimagining of the complete transportation system,” he added.

Apart from India, Virgin Hyperloop One is working on projects in the UAE, the US, Canada, Finland, and the Netherlands.

Gitte said Shivajinagar is the central point of the city and is also important as far as commuting between the two cities is concerned. “A route connecting central Mumbai, perhaps around Dadar, to Shivajinagar in central Pune seems to be the most promising,” added Gitte.

PUNE: Los Angeles-based Virgin Hyperloop One which is in a phase of conducting a pre-feasibility study of setting up Pune-Mumbai Hyperloop route is thinking of making Shivajinagar the starting point of the Hyperloop. This information was shared by Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) Chief Kiran Gitte in a press conference on Tuesday at PMRDA office in Aundh.

Gitte said Shivajinagar is the central point of the city and is also important as far as commuting between the two cities is concerned. “A route connecting central Mumbai, perhaps around Dadar, to Shivajinagar in central Pune seems to be the most promising,” added Gitte.

The project development cost reaches to about Rs 150 cr/km. “The detailed project report of Abu Dhabi to Dubai which is 120 km hyperloop mentions project cost of Rs 18,000 crore,” added Gitte.

Under the pre-feasibility study, Virgin Hyperloop One along with other authorities is studying the passenger traffic, vehicular traffic, freight trade, route study, safety issues, hurdles and other details between the two cities. As a part of the pre-feasibility study PMRDA and Virgin Hyperloop One conducted its first workshop for the same on Tuesday along with Superintendent of Highway Police, RTO, Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) and Public Works Department. As per the data provided by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Limited to PMRDA, there are about 1.1 lakh vehicles using the Mumbai-Pune route of which 80,000 are cars and 6,000 buses on daily basis. Similarly, around 3 lakh passengers commute between the city daily. “We also discussed proposals to connect Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) to Chakan as sixty per cent of the freight from JNPT reaches Chakan. We also discussed the extension of the loop from Dadar to Mumbai airport and from Shivajinagar to Purandar Airport,” added Gitte.

Currently, the authorities are thinking of linking the Hyperloop with the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.

Gitte said the Hyperloop project is in the testing phase and the testing centre is in Las Vegas.

A FAST-MEDIUM OF TRANSPORT
The Hyperloop medium is fast, direct-to-destination transport mode that can achieve speeds of up to 1,080 kmph. As per PMRDA officials, a person can travel from Pune to Mumbai in 14 minutes and 5,000 passengers can travel at one go.

5000 people at one go? Its going to be like a long train or multiple individual pods running in same direction? Also cost wise, it is not too costly to build compared to bullet trains.

That's amazing. Then India really makes a serious jump in mass transportation without having suffer from the conventional pains of climbing the stairs one by one.

India jumping onto the tenth stairs of transportation right from the current bottom first and second is wonderful.

Wow that's awesome India needs something like this great work India good to see India modernizing.

It will be costly but India needs to realize you can't keep building cheap shit 95% of the railways in India is outdated and built 100 years ago you have to pay to get good quality.

Looks like india is trying to skip whole generation of Hsr, and jump to hyperloop as it promises more than a double speed at lesser cost than HSr.
Interesting times ahead as I read such project in at least 3 states of india, namely, maharashtra, karnatak, and andhra pradesh

That looks like typo, i don't think it can do 5000 in one go.

I smell sarcasm but what you said is near truth.

Indian cities are quite close to each other and hyperloop makes more sense than HSR between two business capitals. Btw HSR is also coming there as Japan has invested there.

What we arre trying to do here is give alternatives to standard modes of transportation and trying which one works.

Seems like this is almost something like in The Jetsons.
