But the 'getting closer to the US' will definitely reinforce the trend.

As far as I understand from the post shared by @Lure , TPP will not only render Vietnam into a low-end cheap manufacturing powerhouse with little chance to upgrade, but also damage its traditional agri business which has no chance to compete powerful economies such as the US under a 0% tariff scheme. But, their country, their choice.

If I am Vietnamese China-hater, I would be scared of a Trump presidency and, instead, I would pray to every available God to let McCain live a bit longer as well as a Hillary presidency.

If America lifts arms embargo tomorrow, I would guess, after tomorrow we would order a squadron of F35 for the Marines Corps.

You see Russia want to keep their traditional sphere of influence such east Europe, central Asia, India and Vietnam, so Russia was reluctant to cooperate with China deeper for not upsetting their close friend even Russia and China found a common interest to counter US alliance expansion.

But now Vietnam is cozying with US to counter China and not only that you guys gonna take a way a big chunk of military sale cake from Russian's mouth. The combined of US-Russian antagonism and how Russia's friends are cozying US one after another , This is not only reduce Russia influence but reduce their military sale and economy interest, you think if your're Russia, you like that?

For China, there is no difference if you buy arm from Russia, EU or US but ironically Russia sold more sophisticate arm to India and Vietnam than to China. And it's not a matter of concern because Vietnam don't represent a threat to China beside being considered as annoying neighbor and you can say the same about China too .
