Vietnamese IC chip manufacturers sign contracts with Japan

The Vietnam National University Integrated Circuit Design Research and Education Center (ICDREC) has signed a cooperation contract with Japanese CM Engineering.

Under the contract, ICDREC will make wireless sensor chips for designing power source units in microprocessors for radio multi-band, multi-system transceivers.

CDREC will have the task of making the wireless sensor chip designed to power supply parts in microprocessor radio transceivers and multi-band, multi-systems.

CME is the firm that specializes in providing the designs of the examination and certification services as well as providing highly competitive IPs to customers for the development of wireless processor SoC.

SoC or SOC is an integrated circuit (IC) that integrates all components of a computer or other electronic system into a single chip.

ICDREC’s director Ngo Duc Hoang said in order to become the partner of CME, the center has to prove it can satisfy the high requirements set by the Japanese firm.

Japanese firms are well known as being very choosy in selecting partners. They spent two years learning the center’s capability in meeting the requirements in infrastructure items, chip’s quality and the labor force before making final decisions.

The cooperation contract is a new step taken in IC industry development cooperation between Vietnam and Japan and cooperation in analog IC design.

An expert noted that success in the cooperation deal will create prerequisites to further promote the production of high-quality ICs to serve society’s needs, and create a solid foundation for the production of good engineers for Vietnam’s IC industry.

Hoang admitted that the cooperation contract can show the high result of the work that ICDREC, under the support of the Ministry of Science and Information and the HCM City’s IC Industry Development Program, can do.

ICDRED has got the city’s support in the Design House project, under which the city buys software products and assigns them to ICDRED for management. The software will be open for all the research units in the city to use and serve the training of IC engineers.

Hoang said that Vietnam can develop its IC industry by developing the labor force to do outsourcing for partners and make Vietnamese chips from A to Z.

Hoang said ICDRED has been asked to undertake a phase of the production of making wireless sensor chips as a part of the project.

“Wireless sensors are a growing tendency,” Hoang explained.

“The chips to be made by ICDREC can be used for Intel or Samsung,” he said.

Both Intel and Samsung have great capacity in both designing and manufacturing of chips
Why would they use this chips?
IC designing and manufacturing are not so high tech nowadays.
Yet huge investment and lack of potential market are two things that block others into this industry.
I do not see the two issues can be solve in Vietnam..

Sometimes, Intel and Samsung don't have that creative idea....it is like saying why can't Facebook create Instagram or Whatsapp?

IC design is very skilled labor intensive work, and it is a very broad industry. You can have high performance chips like Intel makes or you can have low performance customized chips.

If Intel or Samsung is not aware of the idea, then how could this kind of institute have such idea..
These institutes usually are far from end customer and market..

Plenty of IC designers out there that started out from a university or some other chip company. ARM architecture was conceived at University of Cambridge for example, and Intel completely missed the 'low power' computing architecture.
Today, ARM is the dominant architecture in mobile computing systems like smart phones, tablets etc

US university is very close to the silicone valley .
They could put their ideas into reality in short time.
Also many ideas are real demands from the IC industry.
it is a complete industry chain.
In China, the industry is growing but still pretty weak.
And in VN, I doubt if there is such an industry chain..

It is called 'innovation'
