U.S. Senators optimistic about further development of Vietnam-U.S. bilateral ties
HANOI, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Relations between the United States and Vietnam have significantly improved over the years, and the both sides are optimistic about further development of the bilateral ties in the future.
The statement was made by U.S. Senator John McCain at a press conference held here on Thursday during his on-going visit to Vietnam, together with the other three U.S. Senators.
John McCain from Arizona led a group of three U.S. Senators, including Joseph Lieberman from Connecticut, Sheldon Whitehouse from Rhode Island and Kelly Ayotte from New Hampshire, to visit Vietnam till January 20.

HANOI (Reuters) McCain, a former navy pilot and prisoner of war in Vietnam, said ties between the United States and Vietnam should be strengthened to help counter China, but Vietnam's human rights record would limit progress.
"There is increased tensions with China about the South China Sea and other issues and we believe that a multilateral approach to China and an increase in our strategic partnership with Vietnam is certainly called for," he said.
Lieberman said many in the U.S. Congress would like to be able to transfer weapons to Vietnam "to particularly enhance maritime security" of the South China Sea, but that was unlikely unless human rights improved.
