HANOI, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam has seen an increasing figure of foreign direct investment (FDI) from China in the first two months of 2017, according to the Foreign Investment Agency (FIA) under the Ministry of Planning and Investment on Thursday.

A total of 721.7 million U.S. dollars of Chinese FDI was recorded in Vietnam in two-month period, up 152.78 percent year-on-year, accounting for 21 percent of the country's total FDI, said FIA, adding that China has become the second largest FDI contributor to Vietnam, after Singapore.

Specifically, in January-February period, Chinese investors have registered to implement 123 projects and 174 times of share purchase. Some typical projects by Chinese investors during the period include Billion Vietnam polyester synthetic fiber plant (with investment of 220 million U.S. dollars) in central Tay Ninh province, infrastructure construction in Lan Son industrial complex and Khai Hong Viet plastic factory (150 million U.S. dollars) in northern Bac Giang provinces among others, local Tien Phong (Pioneer) newspaper quoted the agency as saying.

According to local economist Le Xuan Nghia, in the coming time, a trend of transferring Chinese capital into Southeast Asian countries including Vietnam will be seen. In other Southeast Asian nations such as the Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand, Chinese investors also pour money in giant projects, said Nghia.

@kecho , @Viet , looks like China has overtaking Japan as Vietnam's second largest investor. I think favorable political climate has a big role in this. Keep up the regional-developmentalist paradigm!

. .
I really think the actual relationships between China and Vietnam are much better and closer than what some overseas Viet members are projecting here at PDF :D

Articles like above telling about the Chinese investment, the increasing Chinese tourists coming to Vietnam, visit by the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Nguyễn Phú Trọng, to China not long ago, and many others won't happen if what prevails in Vietnam is the hostile atmosphere and strained relationship!

Indeed it's pretty dumb for Vietnam to be hostile against China, just for the very basic necessity: the fresh waters, its rivers have the upstream in China! People just need to be sane and sober... think and think! That's why I don't believe the mindset and attitude projected by some members here with personas tied to the Vietnamese do reflect the true general perceptions of the Vietnamese people. Of course I realize that Vietnamese people will look at its northern neighbor as the big brother due to its sheer size and strength but that's just natural... size does matter! But to play cunningly the factor of USA or Japan against China is a very dumb move. Among many others, they just need to remember: WATER, WATER :coffee:

Not to mention the vast economic opportunities offered by OBOR, AIIB, Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) etc.

you are not as clean as you thought. reaction follows action. if China does not play hostile action, Vietnam would not counter with reaction. maybe it is good for everybody if concentrating on business. China companies are welcome with increasing investments and Chinese tourists are welcome to visit bringing money to our hotels. You can copy Singapore. official opening of the Mapletree Business Centre in Saigon. two more Singapore sponsored office towers in the same precinct.

You are late and new to the game of fdi in vietnam. It's not how you lead in fdi capital this year but it's the total fdi capital you have invested in vietnam throughout the decades. That honor belong to the japanese, the korean, the american. Most of the factories of vietnam is located in the deep south such as binh duong and dong nai and when you tour this area, pretty much all the factories bear the name of japanese and american companies, none is a chinese one.

. . .
Was it not you who was complaining about the meatless bone China threw at you guys? What a change in attitude all of a sudden. yes showing gratitude can improve the image of the Viets, keep it up
I am grateful to China investment like you to Japan investment. Don't you know Beef bones are the key ingredients for Pho? Delicious.

But Vietnam is too small to seriously compete with China head to head.
The SIZE does matter.
The river upstreams are located in China as well :P

The two are simply in different league. You will have to learn to face, live and accept the reality... however you feel, it is not important, only reality matters... otherwise you'll be haunted with endless agonies your entire life :drag:

That honor used to belong to Japanese and Korean, that's correct, but America? What honor?

Note @TaiShang is from Taiwan, which has already become a major investor in Vietnam since at least 15 years ago, see below accumulated committed capital as of July 2002 reported in IMF. On the contrary, where was America?

I mention the total FDI capitals through the decades starting from the late 80's; you gave me a data just for 2016.

By the end of June of 2015, US investors ranked 7 among 103 foreign countries and territories in Vietnam with 742 existing projects worth 11.6 billion USD. However, this statistics do not fully show the investment from US because some of big US enterprises, namely Procter and Gamble, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, invest in Vietnam through other countries, such as: British Virgin Islands, Singapore, Hong Kong.

Mind you; we don't even count the Ca Voi Xanh gas field off the coast of Vietnam that is being developed by Exxon Mobil at the moment; the entire complex costs more than $10 billion usd. Yup, one project just top it on.

I would say usa is the largest investor in vietnam throughout the decades if we take into account usa companies that invest in vietnam through hong kong, Singapore, british virgins island

Read again, the data as of July 2002 was total accumulated FDI starting from day one, not just for any single year. It shows that by 2002, that's 15 years ago, US was nowhere in sight. So if US now is a key player, it's "late and new to the game of fdi in vietnam" as you put it.

You can say whatever contrary to facts. No literate person will say Singapore is the largest investor in Vietnam IF takes into account of their companies investing "through" US (which itself is the biggest receiver of FDI on this planet), Netherlands, Japan, because that's simply not state-to-state FDI any more.

If ranked #7 deserves an honor, why not mention the 6 nations ahead of US?

because you intentionally left out usa as one of the biggest if not the largest investor in vietnam in term of accumulated capital.:usflag:

There is no "if", USA is factually far from being largest investor in term of accumulated FDI capital compared to at least six other nations. This is true both 15 years ago, as well as nowadays.

.
I don't really understand this issue of being "grateful" or "ungrateful" of FDI. In the free market if you make yourself attractive to investment, money will come. When business owners invest they are looking for return on risk adjusted return on capital, not gratefulness. If a country is unable to make itself attractive to capital it will not get money regardless of whether it's "grateful" or not. Everyone is looking out for their own best interest. No one will risk doing charity work when their competitors are looking out for their bottom line.
