Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited Vietnam last year for bilateral talks. He had also granted a $500 million credit to the nation for purchase of defence goods.
New Delhi, August 18: Vietnam confirmed the purchase of BrahMos missile from India which is considered to be one of the most lethal missiles of the world. The purchase of missile is to persistently pursue national defence policy of peace and self-defence, said Foreign Ministry of Vietnam. Calling the purchase a ‘normal practice’, Le Thi Thu Hang, spokesperson of Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Delhi-Vietnam have bonded well in various areas like economy, society and security cooperation and the purchase was in line with defence policy of Vietnam.
As per the statement of Hang, the two nations do not want to compromise on security cooperation and want to contribute towards peace around the globe, reported HanoiTimes
BrahMos Missile:
- Travels at a speed of Mach 2.8 to 3.0 (3,400-3,700 km).
- The missile was developed with a joint effort of Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroeyenia.
- It is based on the sidelines of Russian P-800 Oniks cruise missile.
- It can be launched from land, submarine, ships, aircraft.
- The second version of the missile is currently being developed and reports suggest it will travel with a speed of Mach 7.
In February this year, news agency Reuters had reported that Delhi was in talks with Vietnam to sell short range surface missile.
