Is Russia ready for this? I mean we can't do it without them since Brahmos was developed with them.

Why not??The Brahmos was developed with export in mind.Russia and Vietnam have good relations,Vietnam uses Su 30s.So Russia won't have any problem at all if the Brahmos is sold to Vietnam.And why should they,the Ruskies want money and they can get a lot by exporting these to Vietnam.

In principle, we should sell Brahmos to Vietnam. However we need to consider following issues:-
1. We need Russia's concurrence to sell Brahmos to a third party.
2. Have we developed an export version yet?
3. I don't know if we should start exporting them before we can satisfy the demands of our own armed forces. We should arm ourselves first before arming others.

Other requests made by Vietnam can be met easily without any difficulty and they should be met by us immediately.

The IA alone has placed order of 1.6 billion $ worth for the Brahmos Blk 2/3 meaning they want to induct between 600-800 pieces.Now there are more orders by IN and in near future IAF will also place huge order for the air launched version.So if we go by your logic,we will never be able to export this system to anyone.

HYDERABAD, NOV. 11:
Having demonstrated its awesome firepower on land and sea targets, Brahmos the supersonic cruise missile is all set to be tested in tough sub-sea environment as well as launched from an aircraft in 2012.

A product of Indo-Russian joint venture, Brahmos missile has hit the target 24 out of 25 times, powering its way as the most destructive weapon in the Indian Army’s armoury up to 300 km range. The missile reaches 2.8 mach speed (mach is speed of sound) as it inflicts heavy damage on enemy targets.

The Brahmos version that can be launched from a submarine or fired from an aircraft being developed by the BrahMos Aerospace company will be tested beginning early 2012, said Mr Sivathanu Pillai, Chief Executive Officer.

BrahMos Aerospace, which is a consortia of industry and labs from both India and Russia has completed 10 years. It was launched with a $300-million development fund created by the two countries. The efforts of the joint venture have resulted in the induction of the land and sea version into the Army and Navy.

The company is sitting pretty with an order book of $5 billion from the Indian armed forces. “We have an option of exporting the missile, but have refrained though there are enquiries as the domestic demand is very huge," Mr Pillai told Business Line here.

In the coming year, development work on the hypersonic version with speeds of Mach 7 will be initiated. The necessary efforts from both the Indian and Russian scientific and industrial establishments is on, he said.

The Indian Army has already raised two regiments, which are equipped with the missile and have the capability to use it a war situation. The third regiment is expected to be ready in 2013, he said.

Ditto for naval surface combatants also... We should give them training in operating huge warships and frigates of ~6000T displacements first coz brahmos can't be equipped with destroyers with lower tonnage...

dont forget that russia makes alot more money with china. As they have coporated several times togethers and not to mention their economical ties. Russia will risk this when selling to vietnam, and at the end of the day lose more then they will gain

India needs to further ties with Vietnam and help their economy and military grow and on the other hand Vietnam can provide India with some of the best military training and a free port. The strengthening of Asia will enable the region to defend itself better against the western crusaders. You just never know when the resource hungry west might show up with its carriers and nukes.

I am willing to bet that this spineless government will remain on the fence, wet its pants and delay so long that Vietnamese would then move on to approach Russia directly. Hope the government gets replaced before any decision on this is made.

Absolutely right buddy.By the way,when I said 1.6+ billion order I meant to say only the Army.But no matter how big the order is,Vietnam order can be met because their requirement will be lower for sure.Any way,I heard that Army was thinking of inducting 800+ pieces and also want the range of Brahmos 2 to be doubled.Don't know how they gonna do it considering Russia's commitment to the MTCR.Only viable option is to collaborate with ISRO to develop a scramjet engine inhouse.
