The first of Vietnam Airlines’ new Boeing B787-9 Dreamliners has rolled out of Boeing’s paint shop at Paine Field in Washington, US, providing a first full look at the national carrier’s new aircraft in its distinctive updated blue and gold lotus livery.

Coinciding with a major fleet upgrade - including a total of 19 B787-9s and 14 Airbus A350-900 XWBs - Vietnam Airlines’ brand new livery is part of a comprehensive overhaul of the airline’s corporate identity and brand image.

Resplendent in its newly painted livery, Vietnam Airlines’ first new B787-9 aircraft is now undergoing pre-flight testing at Boeing’s Everett facility.

Vietnam Airlines will be the first airline in Asia to operate both Boeing and Airbus’ latest next-generation aircraft at the same time.

The SkyTeam member will also be the first airline to operate the new B787-9 Dreamliner nonstop between Southeast Asia and Europe, with Heathrow becoming the first international destination on the Vietnam Airlines network to be served by the new aircraft.

Frequencies will rise from four flights to five or six flights per week between Heathrow and Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City following the deployment of the Dreamliners, before increasing to a daily service for summer 2016.

The B787-9 Dreamliner is the latest extension to Boeing’s super-efficient 787 family.

The new aircraft can fly farther, and with more passengers and more cargo, than the B787-8 - but with the same exceptional environmental performance: 20 per cent less fuel usage and 20 per cent fewer emissions than the aircraft it will replace.

9 MARCH 2015 PRESS RELEASE
The first A350 XWB for Vietnam Airlines has been rolled out of the Airbus paint shop in Toulouse on Friday 6th March, featuring the airline’s updated distinctive blue and gold lotus livery.

The aircraft, which will be leased from AerCap, is now entering the advanced stage of production. This will include installation of the engines, completion of cabin furnishing, and cockpit fitting, followed by ground and flight tests. The aircraft is scheduled for delivery in the middle of the year.

Vietnam Airlines will become the first Asian airline to fly the A350 XWB and the second operator in the world. Vietnam Airlines will acquire 14 A350 XWBs, including ten on order from Airbus and four under lease agreements. The carrier will operate its A350 XWB fleet on premium long haul routes, beginning with services between Hanoi and Paris.

The A350 XWB is the latest addition to the market-leading Airbus Widebody Family. The type sets new standards in terms of flight experience for passengers, operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness for airlines. At the end of February 2015, the A350 XWB had won 780 firm orders from 40 customers worldwide.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) and Boeing has signed a Memorandum of Collaboration in support of Vietnam receiving category 1 approval by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The Memorandum of Collaboration was signed in Hanoi on January 26 by representatives from the CAAV and Boeing, with Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Ngoc Dong and US ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius also in attendance.

"Boeing is pleased to continue supporting the CAAV's goal of FAA Category 1 approval," said Ralph Boyce, President of Boeing Southeast Asia.

"This agreement continues our longstanding partnership in Vietnam and our commitment and dedication to its growing aviation industry," he added.

Under the agreement, Boeing will help the CAAV work through the Corrective Action Plan and assist in facilitating the appropriate training for CAVV personnel.

Once the FAA Category 1 status is achieved, Vietnamese-based commercial airlines can offer direct passenger and cargo service between Vietnam and the US.

US Ambassador Ted Osius told the participants that the ultimate goal of this collaboration is to help Vietnam achieve the regulatory and safety standard required for its commercial airlines to operate direct flights between Vietnam and the US.

The strong and sustained support from Boeing and the US government on this effort is another clear demonstration of their continued commitment to help Vietnam achieve its goals, he said.

The ambassador hoped that these direct flights will build yet another bridge to strengthen relations between the countries by encouraging increased tourism and business travel, which will facilitate greater people-to-people and commercial ties.-VNA
