Missile scientist, V.G. Sekharan has been appointed Chief Controller R&D (missiles & Strategic systems) and Programme Director, AGNI.

He is at present, distinguished Scientist and Director, Advanced Systems Laboratory, Hyderabad. Sekharan is also the chief designer of the Long Range Ballistic Missile System AGNI 5.

As Director, Advanced Systems Laboratory, he has played a key role in envisioning and evolving the Strategies for long range missiles.

The big challenge ahead would be to meet the demands of the user–defence forces and raise the credibility of the Indian defence research community he said. There is a need to strengthen synergy between DRDO-defence forces–industry urgently, he told Business Line.

Over the years, the DRDO has developed expertise in design and development of various missile systems and demonstrated launch capabilities. It was time to accelerate the process of induction and create the sound domestic industry base, to prove the utility and improve the fire power and security of the country, he added.

A Graduate in Mechanical Engineering, he pursued his M.E Degree (Aeronautical Engineering) from IISc, Bangalore. From Queen’s University he completed his Ph.D. in Aeronautical Engineering in 1981 and was subsequently awarded Post Doctoral Research fellow at the University of Southampton till 1984.

Sekharan Joined DRDO in 1984 and has been involved in the design and development of the Re-entry systems and technology for ballistic missile applications. His contributions and research in the area of Solid Propellant Rocket Motors is now the main thrust and the backbone of Long Range Missile System.
