US defence major and integrated technology companyHoneywellsaid it is positive on the defence outlook in India especially in the context of the recent government announcement to allow 100% foreign direct investment (FDI) in defence in the country.

Anant Maheshwari, president, Honeywell India said, "We are very positive both on the defence outlook in India and the way
the new government is at least speaking of initiatives that they plan to take in the defence sector. I think the Indian defence sector needs a lot of influx, both in terms of technology and in terms of capital."

In order to boost domestic manufacturing, the department of industrial policy & promotion (DIPP) has recently prepared a draft Cabinet note that proposes to allow up to 100% FDI in defence with three caps, 49%, 75% and 100%.

In case of no technology transfer, the cap is 49% FDI, while in case of techonology transfer the cap is 74%. The department has proposed that the no-cap policy be reserved for cases which bring in state-of-the-art technology.

Honeywell had partnered with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) more than 40 years ago to manufacture the Honeywell TPE331 turboprop engines, the first fully manufactured engine in India which powers the Dornier 228 aircraft of the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, and for the global market. That collaboration has now expanded to include other indigenous HAL products like advanced light helicopter, light combat aircraft, etc., of which Honeywell systems and sub-systems are key components. Honeywell has also licensed the Primus 500 weather radar to HAL. The company'sdefenseand space business is also exploring opportunities beyond aviation in surface systems and space with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

As Maheshwari put it, "We are already participating in some defence programmes, and will continue to participate to upgrade the tachnology in defence forces. We expect the pace to pick up in the six month's from now." The company has expertise in engine technology, unmanned aerial vehicles, navigation and helicopter safety to help the Indian military lower operational costs and increase mission success.

The association that began with a tie-up with India's only defense OEM, HAL, today, each of Honeywell Aerospace's three business units is present in India. More than 2,800 aerospace engineers work on solutions for India and the world as part of Honeywell Technology Solutions, the global technology development and engineering arm of Honeywell.

At present, more than 50% of the company's portfolio is linked to energy efficiency. Honeywell India has posted $1 billion in domestic sales and exports in 2013. The company today inaugurated a solar water heating systems manufacturing plant inVadodara, its sixth manufacturing facility in the country. The 50,000-square-foot Vadodara facility will manufacture solar water heating (SWH) systems for residential, commercial and industrial applications for the domestic market in India as well as for export to Southeast Asia and North Africa.

"Solar water heating technology is evolving as one of the most energy-efficient methods of heating water. The opening of this facility marks Honeywell's entry

into the renewable energy product manufacturing," said Beth Wozniak, president, Honeywell Environmental and Combustion Controls.
