That is a huge understatement. He was voted in by his people with an overwhelming majority after decades of useless puppets that caters only to foreign corporation that pays the minimum, take all the resources out, monopolize key industries and leaves absolutely nothing for the citizens.

Totally different from other democracies where people either grudgingly vote for the "least horrible" party or flips between parties so frequently that nothing ever gets done.

first he was chosen by the people, just because USA didn't chose him, you can't call him dictator... nope Alasad will always be your nightmare, because there are 23 milion Alasad in Syria..
He closed almost all opposition TV stations, radios and newspapers, he used state money to bribe voters for himself, he rewrote constitution for himself. Thats dictatorship.

Of course he was not a dictator like your Al Wahish (Assad) or Kim Jong Il who get 99.8% of votes, but still a dictator.

hahaha, that's what America told you... anyone that opposes America becomes a dictator....

well guess what.. Venezuela don't give a crap about what you say.. and Chavez party is still in power

and Alwahish scares the crap out of you... you can't even comment without mentioning his name

I don't know about Al-Assad. I like the retarded face he does when he is happy. It's like watching a mentally challenged child get a present.

The vulgarity of the Israeli members of this forum doesn't cease to stun me. Please, shut up about Venezuela. You know nothing even of the countries that border you, yet want to pass judgment about South America? Save your garbage for yourselves - nothing that you say is worth reading, everything is a hysteric distortion learned from the corporate press, as seen in this ridiculous use of the "dictator" label that you employ.

No thats fact.

Many dictators support America.

Yes they still have oil money to bribe the poor lazy idiots.

I mentioned Alhawish because u mentioned him. He behaved well and dd not dere to touch Israel even when he had a strong army supported by USSR. Now he lost USSR support and his army does not control even own country.

Chavez was right when he told everyone the devil was on that podium and the smell was still present. Keep the fight on in heaven as the devil is still looking for trouble around the globe.

Chávez is leaving behind some mixed heritage. There's no denying that his government has resulted in improvement of general life standards. Health care and education in all its levels have both had their reach extended under Chávez, and this is very much reflected on Venezuela's social indicators. The World Bank estimates that Venezuela has all but eliminated extreme poverty, and the country figures among the best of Latin America in the UN's Human Development Index. The downside to these trends, however, is that such improvement has been made entirely on the basis of Venezuela's oil revenues, and the money extracted in this way has not been used to finance productive activities and high level employment for Venezuela. That's why, IMO, Venezuela's social progress has not had much of an impact on the country's crime rates, which -- this is worth saying -- were already very high become Chávez came onto the scene.

The dictator accusation is a nothing short of hysteric -- Venezuela ranks higher than Israel on the Civil Liberties sub-index of The Economist's Democracy Index. If Venezuela is a dictatorship, Israel is a totalitarian dystopia. But it is true that Chávez has meddled in Venezuela's institutions in his own favor: this is quite obviously seen in the army. But, in my view, this was at least partly because Venezuela's institutions were already politicized, though in a right-wing direction. The 2002 coup against him, led by the army, is proof enough that business and media elites, as well as foreign interests, had a significant hold on Venezuela's institutions.
