I think there are still some good practitioners left in north, but i have to say the Vedic Pandits in south still follow the rituals and scriptures to the letter.While in North some of it has changed. You should visit Tirupati Vedic University or the Godavari and Krishna District Vedic Pandits.
They still take part in Ghanapati challenges.

Tradition here allows everyone to do piligrimage and there are certain rules to be followed.

Wrong. There is no such tradition. All caste Hindus can enter any temple.

Only Dalits were not allowed to enter temple. That is because they were "out castes" for having defiled one or more Hindu practices.
