Milind GhatwaiPosted online: Tuesday, January 09, 2007 Muslim groups oppose programme; govt says schools must organise it but not compulsory for students

BHOPAL, JANUARY 8: The controversy over singing of Vande Mataram in schools is echoing in Madhya Pradesh again, this time over the government’s decision to make Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) compulsory in government schools and colleges on January 25.

A few Muslim organisations have said they will not let their children attend schools and colleges on that day because Islam does not permit bowing before anyone but Allah.

The government had asked educational institutions across the state to organise mass Surya Namaskar on January 25, on which it proposes to come out with a new yoga policy.

District headquarters have been told to organise parallel programmes, with assistance from voluntary groups, at places chosen by the collector, with selected students and teachers performing Surya Namaskar en masse. Councillors, MLAs, and MPs are to be invited to the function.

The spokesman of Jamiat-e-Ulema’s Madhya Pradesh chapter, Noorullah Yusuf, told The Indian Express that by making Surya Namaskar compulsory, the government had violated the religious freedom enjoyed by the minority community.
“We won’t let our children go to schools on that day,” he said. He alleged that school managements in smaller towns like Guna were being forced to organize the programme against their wishes. He said the Muslim organizations would chalk out their course of action once the January 11 meeting of All India Muslim Personal Law Board was over, and submit a memorandum to the Governor, requesting him to direct the government to drop the programme.

In a tacit admission that the government sensed opposition from the minority community, the resource teachers have already been told to replace the 12 mantras that correspond every position of Surya Namaskar with numbers.

Principal Secretary (education) Indranil Dani said the programme was compulsory only for government schools and not private schools. He said he had not heard of opposition to it from any quarters so far.

The government, however, has made it clear that it would encourage private schools and colleges also to take part in the programme.

However, Commissioner (School Education) L S Baghel said the order does not make it compulsory for students to attend the programme. “The government can’t force students to attend it against their wishes,” he said and added that, “the idea is to only inspire the young generation to know more about yoga and its health benefits.”

Already, teachers are being trained at Bhopal’s Yog Prashikshan Kendra, and by January 11 every government school will have at least one trained teacher who, in turn, will train students. Practice sessions will be held on January 13 and January 20.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had announced his government’s intention to popularize yoga for its health benefits in the presence of Baba Ramdev, who is expected to attend the programme in Bhopal at which the policy will be announced.

The yoga guru has proposed to set up a Patanjali Yog Kendra in Madhya Pradesh, where yoga training and research in Indian medicinal systems will be carried out. He has sought 1,000 acres for the purpose.

true. They should not make Surya namaskar compulsory, thats pure BS.

They should be made to sing no other song other than the National Anthem. I dunno about Vande Mataram. Its a very important song in our history, though Muslims think that its essentially Hindu now.

Ahsan,

Why do you have to take bad examples of life as a precedent. Why not be the greater man, Why cant you force a change in the Indian run forums by your actions here, I aint no peacenik, I have clearly expressed by views about BR as well as PDF over here. As long none of the video's over here degrade Pakistan, I dont think you should have a problem. And Please do post some Video's about Pakistan. I tried my level best to find a military advertisement video of pakistan for the Recuritment videos section.

You don't get it, do you? Those videos are NATIONALISTIC INDIAN VIDEOS. What are they doing on a Pakistani forum. I am not taking bad examples, I am taking the majority of the examples, which happen to be bad in this case.

Useles discussion, since no one has actually given the meaning of Vande Mataram.

I will give you the answer, malaymishra, but first tell me, will you do anything which shall overlap your religion?Say, for instance, if tomorrow, a song is developed in which the words are,'There is no Durga, only ALLAH', and you are supposed to sing it, what will you do?Refuse-I hope.

Now,Herewith a rough rendering of the song Vande Mataram:

Mother, I bow to thee!
Rich with thy hurrying streams,
bright with orchard gleams,
Cool with thy winds of delight,
Dark fields waving Mother of might,
Mother free.

Glory of moonlight dreams,
Over thy branches and lordly streams,
Clad in thy blossoming trees,
Mother, giver of ease
Laughing low and sweet!
Mother I kiss thy feet,
Speaker sweet and low!
Mother, to thee I bow.

Who hath said thou art weak in thy lands
When the sword flesh out in the seventy million hands
And seventy million voices roar
Thy dreadful name from shore to shore?
With many strengths who art mighty and stored,
To thee I call Mother and Lord!
Though who savest, arise and save!
To her I cry who ever her foeman drove
Back from plain and Sea
And shook herself free.

Thou art wisdom, thou art law,
Thou art heart, our soul, our breath
Though art love divine, the awe
In our hearts that conquers death.
Thine the strength that nervs the arm,
Thine the beauty, thine the charm.
Every image made divine
In our temples is but thine.

Thou art Durga, Lady and Queen,
With her hands that strike and her
swords of sheen,
Thou art Lakshmi lotus-throned,
And the Muse a hundred-toned,
Pure and perfect without peer,
Mother lend thine ear,
Rich with thy hurrying streams,
Bright with thy orchard gleems,
Dark of hue O candid-fair

In thy soul, with jewelled hair
And thy glorious smile divine,
Lovilest of all earthly lands,
Showering wealth from well-stored hands!
Mother, mother mine!
Mother sweet, I bow to thee,
Mother great and free!

Compare the above with the following Qur’anic verses (59: 23,24):

“He is God, other than whom there is no deity, Knower of the Unseen and the Seen.
He is the All-Merciful, the Benevolent.
He is God, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfect, the Bestower of faith, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior.
Exalted is God above whatever they associate with Him.
He is God, the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names.
Whatever is in the heavens and the earth exalts Him.
And He is Exalted in Might, the Wise.”

Let us assume you are non-Muslim: which one of the two would he prefer to sing? And he can choose only one of the two as they contradict and refute each other so totally and completely. Would a non-Muslim like to sing the praises of his Lord, the Creator and Sustainer, or praises of a land?

.
Yeah i get your point, but the song is essentially 'mother i salute thee' or 'maa tujhe salam', dont remember the 'mother i kiss thy feet'!

Well then in all the Hindu schools it should be made compulsory, its a beautiful song anyways, and in ALL the school, the National Anthem be made compulsory, which i think already is, but im not sure.

Dude.. keyword: NATIONALISTIC. End of. It doesn't matter whether it has anything about Pakistan. That's where the debate ends. Why bring india's existance into this, it has nothing to do with this debate.

.
So Indians on this board should not take pride in their country or their existance or atleast share their love for their nation with their Pakistani friends.
You didnt answer my question, so i will repeat
Do you agree India has the right to exist or not?

Answer me this.. will Pakistanis be allowed to post this on an indian forum? Of all the examples I have seen so far, from worst to best, the answer would be no. Things like india becoming a superpower, etc, is nothing but nationalism which should not be tolerated.

As for your question, yea sure it has right to exist. But how does that has to do with anything here. Are you just trying to drag something else into this to defend yourself.

.
India will become a superpower, 20yrs or 50 yrs, we have a good chance, and we plan to take it, i am sorry it is not according to your wishes, or are you so insecure that it gives you the jitters, Please go check indiandefenceforum.com, it has a got a Pakistani section, And you can see the Indian version of yourself.lol
So what if Indians are bad, why do you wanna be as bad as them, fcuk them i say; I rather be with a Neo and Niaz than people like them
