Uzbek president meets Chinese defense minister

Uzbek President Islam Karimov held talks with visiting Chinese Denfense Minister Liang Guanglie on Friday on deepening bilateral relations.

Liang's visit was the first by a Chinese defense minister since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Uzbekistan and China in 1992, Karimov noted.

The Uzbek president conveyed his best wishes to his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao through Liang, who is also a state councilor.

Karimov acknowledged that Uzbekistan-China cooperation has developed speedily in economic, political and military fields. President Hu's visit last year injected even greater impetus to such development, he said.

Uzbekistan unswervingly upholds the One-China policy and staunchly supports China's efforts against the "three evil forces" of terrorism, extremism and separatism, the president said.

Uzbekistan will continue to work with China in broadening cooperative fields, diversifying collaborative projects and maintaining regional stability, he said.

Liang Guanglie conveyed President Hu's greetings and best wishes to the 73-year-old Uzbek president.

China and Uzbekistan have been supportive of each other on issues of major concern and been engaged in productive cooperation on the bilateral level, and also within entities such as the U.N. and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Liang said.

The military cooperation and the bilateral relations on the whole have seen sound and stable development, Liang said.

Miliatery personnel in both countries has been actively engaged in high-level official visits, technical exchanges and training programs, he said.

The military exchanges will proceed and expand as envisioned and planned by the two heads of states in the two countries, Liang said.

Liang was on a visit to Uzbekistan after attending the defense ministers' meeting of the Shanghai Cooperaiton Organization in Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan.
