USS Defender to Arrive in Port Blaire
PORT BLAIRE, India - USS Defender (MCM 2) will arrive in Port Blaire, India on Sept. 12 for a series of public engagements with reporters and representatives from the Indian government, Indian navy and Indian coast guard.
Rear The crew will also be afforded the opportunity to enjoy the culture and customs of such a unique country.
The evening after their arrival, Defender will host a reception for the Indian navy, coast guard, port authority, government civilians and local business leaders to discuss the growing relationship between U.S. and Indian navies. Later in the week, Defender Sailors will be participating in a sports event and community service activity with Indian sailors.
The crew will participate in multiple cultural exchanges and events to include a soccer match with the Indian navy, a cultural tour of the local area, and a community service event at a disadvantaged boy's school, said Ensign Kyle Gleghorn. We look forward to further strengthening the U.S. and Indian partnership.
Sailors will also have the opportunity to explore Port Blaire and go on tours to experience some of the diverse culture of India. Sailors will also have time to visit local restaurants, shopping venues and go on outdoor adventures through Morale, Welfare and Recreation.
Defender is on a Mine Countermeasure Maritime Partnership Patrol in the 7th Fleet area of responsibility. The patrol is intended to provide valuable experience to the crew as well as an opportunity for the smaller Avenger-class MCMs to build relationships in ports where larger ships can not go. Commanded by Lt. Cmdr. Todd S. Levant, Defender has already visited a variety of ports on its patrol including Okinawa, Japan; Brunei Darussalam; and the city-state of Singapore.
