The US Air Force (USAF) successfully test-fired a Raytheon AIM-9X infrared-guided air-to-air missile from a Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II combat aircraft for the first time, the service announced on 21 January.
AF-1, of the 461st Flight Test Squadron at Edwards Air Force Base, California, became the first F-35 to fire the AIM-9X missile on 12 January. (Lockheed Martin/Chad Bellay)
The flight sciences aircraft, AF-1, of the Joint Strike Fighter Integrated Test Force, took the shot on 12 January over the Pacific Sea Test Range, according to the statement. The missile was launched at 6,000 feet.
The F-35 is able to carry the AIM-9X externally with Block 3F combat software, according to Lockheed Martin. "The AIM-9X is planned to be carried externally on the F-35 in the 3F configuration," company spokesman Mark Johnson told IHS Jane's on 26 January.
