USA competing with China & India to maintain leadership stature

Free media does not guarantee good or reliable Media. Case in point is Times of India.

Times of India is established paper it has the largest circulation among all English-language newspapers in the world and like i mentioned this was reported in western media also why blame Times of India for reporting it? that is the whole point of a free press is it not

That red bird looks suspiciously commie. Just look at it blowing up those imperialist pigs by launching itself at them.

india hell no, china yes. we r very much behind.

Actually it is the sensationalist title that TOI gave which probably brought out this comment. But what the article refers to is that US is feeling threatened after the recent economic turmoil, not being able to bounce back at the speed they expected (even after acting swiftly to spend close to a $1Trillion as bailout for the banking system). There is a sense of desperation to motivate the people and the businesses to act with confidence and determination.

The acceptance rate for the Dem govt is sliding steadily and unless they are able to stir up something before their term ends, its quits for them.

I think some Americans are using the rise of China/India as a reason to "motivate" themselves. The "Chinese professor" advert in America was quite an overt example of this:

Personally I think that is just an overreaction to a threat that might not even come.

But who am I, to question their methods of self-motivation. :)

@CD... yeah I remember posting this video on this forum when it was released... I remember having a debate with you on a similar thread back then on this video.

I think they are more worried with the sub standard level of education in America no wonder people like Palin get confused with North and South Korea, God help us all if they get access to that little red button.

It is actually not like that... their education is one of the best in the world today... It is not about the education system, but rather the cost associated with it. Not many people are able to afford quality education here in the US and most of them are careless in their career choices...

From childhood, the American education system encourages people to explore the world on their own and have an independent outlook. This is often misunderstood by most students to enjoy life rather than focusing on building a strong career in the lines which most Asians would do. you should note that despite all this the US is still a leader in technology and innovation.
(This again is my personal take from what I have seen out here.)

Yes if you can afford private education or get the grades and can afford to go to Yale or Harvard but what about the schools in the ghettos of LA or NYC are they the same standard as a white middle class school say?

Very true. I would argue that many people in the developed world are becoming complacent, due to a high standard of living etc.

In Hong Kong for example, I think that immigrants from the mainland tend to be a lot more "hard working" than local Hong Kong Chinese, who are sometimes spoiled by their rich parents.

Good times and comfortable living has a tendency to cause a lack of motivation. In my opinion at least.

Indian American Anamika Veeramani (14 years) has won the 2010 Scripps National Spelling Bee crown to retain the honor for the ‘desis’ for the third year in a row. She defeated another Indian American, Shantanu Srivatsa of West Fargo, North Dakota in the nationally televised final round on Friday night to become the bee’s 83rd champion. Her win earns a $30,000 cash prize and engraved trophy from the event’s sponsor, The E.W. Scripps Co., along with a $2,500 U.S. savings bond and a complete reference library from Merriam-Webster, a $5,000 scholarship from the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation and a package from Encyclopedia Britannica totaling $3,499.

Year after year white/black american kids are falling behind their asian counterparts why?

What is a white middle class school?

Agree that private education is the best available in the world (most of top ranked univs are private), but there are plenty of state run ones which have quite a high standard and are much more affordable compared to the private ones. (I assumed professional schools in your post). Yes there are several other colleges in the run down neighborhoods, but the quality of students are way low to expect any good output.
More than that, a lot of the students drop out midway from their professional programs to "discover life"... yes it happens quite often. Most people take it a little easy, since they haven't had to face competition, let's say a decade earlier. Last decade has changed the scenario, it is suddenly really competitive, but most haven't realized it yet. It will take some time, but I guess the American leaders are realizing this and pushing for this very change in perception.
