WASHINGTON — The United States is in discussions with close ally Japan about expanding a missile defense system in Asia, the top U.S. general said Thursday.

Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was commenting on a Wall Street Journal report that the U.S. is discussing positioning an early warning radar in southern Japan, supplementing one already in place in the country’s north, to contain threats from North Korea and to counter China’s military.

The U.S. is planning a major expansion of missile defenses in Asia, a move American officials say is designed to contain threats from North Korea, but one that could also be used to counter China's military.

The planned buildup is part of a defensive array that could cover large swaths of Asia, with a new radar in southern Japan and possibly another in Southeast Asia tied to missile-defense ships and land-based interceptors.

It is part of the Obama administration's new defense strategy to shift resources to an Asian-Pacific region critical to the U.S. economy after a decade of war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The expansion comes at a time when the U.S. and its allies in the region voice growing alarm about a North Korean missile threat. They are also increasingly worried about China's aggressive stance in disputed waters such the South China Sea, where Asian rivals are vying for control of oil and mineral rights.

What China should worry about is that the US is going to arm Japan in order to counter balance China in this part of the world and use her as cannon fodder in future US/China conflicts.

Umm yeah we don't do that anymore since we have missiles that go half way around the world without the need to install ballistic missiles in other countries. As well as our submarines can even get closer to China than Japanese mainland to fire missiles if they wanted to.

Why put missiles that are easy to find and stationary? Catch my drift my young apprentice?

Only an imbecile would believe that! Are we so stupid as to think that these American missiles will not be used as a shield against a Chinese threat to Japan? How long does it take to re-position these missiles? And you mean, if Chinese missiles are flying toward Japan, this defence shield will not be used to defend Japan?

Would the Americans tell the Japanese, "Hey guys, sorry for the inconvenience, but we cannot use this missile defence for protecting you as it is meant only for North Korea. So sit back and enjoy your country getting screwed. If rape is inevitable, enjoy it! Cheers!"

China do not base arm forces overseas
China does not allow foreign seperatist movement in its territories to harm other countries

Building a missile shield against China is practically impossible.

But it was Vietnam that invaded Cambodia.
Innocent passage through it EEZ is garrenteed by China. It has never been a problem.
