US voices alarm for press freedom in Bangladesh

By AFP

The United States on Tuesday voiced alarm over what it called a deteriorating climate for press freedom in Bangladesh, which has increasingly made use of a draconian digital security law.

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has become a close partner of the United States, which has welcomed her support on climate change and against Islamic extremism as well as her government’s welcome to hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees fleeing a brutal military campaign in neighboring Myanmar.

“Bangladesh has shown improvements in protecting some human rights over the past year,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said, “but we do remain concerned about the infringement on media and press freedoms.”

“The government of Bangladesh has aggressively applied the Digital Security Act, leading to dozens of arrests for comments critical of the government’s handling of the pandemic, including using the act against academic professionals for the first time,” Price told reporters.

“We urge the government of Bangladesh to protect freedoms of expression and association, including members of the press, and to ensure fair trial guarantees for all of those who have been detained under the Digital Security Act,” he said.

President Joe Biden’s administration has promised to speak out on human rights including media freedom as part of an effort to halt what many fear is a decline of democracy worldwide.

In May, Bangladeshi police arrested one of the country’s top reporters, Rozina Islam, an investigative journalist for the Prothom Alo newspaper who has written scathing stories about the response to Covid-19.

She was accused of stealing health ministry documents.

Hundreds have been detained since the government imposed the Digital Security Act in 2018.

Why isn't u.s doing the same against UK priti Patel. As she is bringing out a new law were journalists do jail time for 14 yrs, for publishing news that humiliate the gov. With this new gov consent is needed before publishing.

We don't need freedom of expression in Bangladesh, Our people have more pressing priorities and needs like food, a stable livelihood, sense of security and a peaceful life.

Honestly, it's almost sickening to hear the US bitch and moan every time and they have one of two lines:

- Freedom of Speech
- Freedom of Express

I don't know which fucker died and passed on the torch to these fucking clown, like really mind your own God damn business, just shut the **** up.

The U.S. is like an overweight McDonald's eating wife all she does if eat, sleep, shit and moan 24/7 eventually the husband will get tired and find a mistress.
