Many of the hundreds of U.S. companies that supply Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. have been contacting the government for exemptions to the ban on selling their products to the Chinese telecom giant, U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said.

The U.S. government will “look favorably” on Huawei suppliers that sell parts that are “not central” to U.S. national security, Ross said Tuesday in response to our question during a news conference at the SelectUSA Investment Summit in Washington, which aims to promote investment in the country.

Caixin reported Tuesday that U.S. chipmaker Intel Corp. has been pushing the government to allow it to continue selling components to Huawei. Google, whose android mobile operating system has been used by Huawei in its popular smartphones, has also been trying to convince the U.S. government to exempt it from the ban, the Financial Times reported last week.

In mid-May, the Commerce Department announced that it was adding Huawei to a so-called Entity List, a change that requires all U.S. companies to get a license to supply technology to the company. The move, which will in effect cut off Huawei from a significant portion of its suppliers, is widely seen as the Trump administration’s attempt to strangle a technological competitor.

Google, Intel, chipmaker Qualcomm and some European and Japanese companies reportedly suspended their supplies of parts to Huawei soon after the U.S. ban.

When the Caixin reporter asked for confirmation about U.S. companies seeking exemptions from the government, Ross said: “Many of the current suppliers to Huawei have been in touch with us in one form or another.”

“Those that are not central to national security interest, we will tend to look favorably upon,” he said.

The Commerce Department on May 20 postponed adding Huawei to the Entities List for 90 days. Ross said the delay was supposed to give the company’s suppliers a chance to apply for exemptions.

In late May, the Chinese government announced that it would soon release its own blacklist to punish U.S. companies that cut off Chinese companies for reasons unrelated to business.

This was a very dangerous and short sighted decision by Trump yes in short term
he was able to hurt Huawei/China but in long term how it's going to to bite them....

. .
It is getting more and more like a vicious cycle of causes and consequences.

The harder Trump is trying to sabotage "Made in China 2025", the more determined Chinese are to pursue "Made in China 2025". Let's see who will be laughing 6 years from now.

. .
With a rampant outside global perception that ... CHN is a copycat society and
CHN being famous as a ... producer of Inferior n Low Quality products,
and who is hellbent to compete only on low pricing ... by sacrificing quality ...

( MADE in CHINA 2025 ) ... is a slogan that carries significant negative connotation.

IMHO, ... the more positively meaningful slogan is ...
( INNOVATED in CHINA 2025 ) ...
or ( INVENTED in CHINA 2025 ).

===

One wonders why ... with so many CHN experts studying english in western countries,
and so many Chinese Elites being extremely enamored with the idiotic western values,
the quality of the advertising and marketing slogans and writing they produce are so embarrassingly pedestrian and inferior.

Trump just gave China a perfect reason to push forward "Made in China 2025".

"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger".
“Made in China 2025” bases on the premises that China can buy foreign tech firms and force foreign tech transfer. Both are dead now. So how is going to work out for you without those premises?

I guess it will not go too far. Maybe you should change to “Made in China 2050”?

"Made In China 2025" was not out of blue and was not "Based on the premises" of foreign tech transfer. I would suggest you to google 863 program, 973 program, 985 project to see for how long China has been contemplating this initiative. Never underestimate China's determination and perseverance, and don't discount the value of high average IQ among orientals to which you belong. On top of that, google "996", "711" to find out the dedication of Chinese engineers in their quest for tech independence. So no, "Made in China" is not dead, it is here to stay, with or without "Forced foreign tech transfer".

Karl Marx said, for 300% profit, Capitalists will sell us the rope with which we use to hang them. "Forced ToT" is the biggest BS the west has been peddling to smear China's progress, and any well educated level headed person can see the logic fallacy in it. How China can "force" tech transfer if not for MNC CEO's own greed?

Your guess doesn't mean much. 20 years back, lots of people in the west guessed "the collapse of China", or "color revolution" in China, but no one had ever guessed China would become what it is today, and its own development plan would arouse so much fear, and became THE target of persecution of the West.
