The US “strongly supports” India’s bid for a permanent seat in an expanded UN Security Council, its Ambassador to India Richard Verma said here today.

“Based on the statement of President Obama, the US strongly supports India’s place in the UN Security Council,” Verma said at a press meet here.

“We know there have been reports to the contrary, but they are not backed by truth. We want to clarify that US supports India’s place in the Security Council,” he said.

“Pace of that movement and best method for that critical effort (for reforms)…We are working on it very strongly. We are working consistently on it. It is a long and complicated process to reform the UN,” he said.

“We strongly support India’s leadership as an emerging global power,” the Ambassador said.

As more and more Indian occupying key and important position around the world, as Indians are improving their economy, this is bound to happen. No one can stop India entering the SC with veto power.

Ok keep dreaming, once Obambam out of the White House. Lol he will label Obambam don't care. Just like his health care system, Obambam care become Obambam don't care.

these quotes are all sugary but actions are not.. The US would keep saying they support SC expansion and India's bid for permanent seat but they only backed out just few months back when the chance of SC expansion came..

We as a country should not get bothered about the so called SC permanent position.. We should work to make ourselves strong in every sense (and particularly in economic sense) and make the so called P5 controlled Security Council useless for India's strategic needs.. Thats the best way when the world comes to India and dont care for SC anymore.. It may take decades but we should work that way only

PM Modi is going to visit UN next month and we can see some movement regarding Permanent UNSC Seat . That time all the countries which supports us seems will issue statements.

Let's see but I wouldn't hold my breath, the UN isn't interested in reforming itself these days and the UNSC is hardly in a state of tranquility.

Until India acquires true economic power that can make or unmake a portion of global trade UNSC permanent seat will remain a mere chip in negotiations. Not far away but certain crucial steps away which can make or break this.

When it really counts, no one will support India.

which war did france "win" to deserve a permanent seat in UNSC ?

they were decimated in consecutive world wars ( also after Dien bien Phu massacre, France is a SECOND rate power).. no war winning shit..

that;s just some wishful thinking on your part, probably due to a lifetime of using 3rd party support as national survival plan.

As said earlier India will have to climb a few more steps in its own development to the point of being a force in the international sphere before any such permanent seat in UNSC. There will be quid pro quo demanded by the current members.

if India become then other countries will push to be come permanent member there is Pakistan Japan

Glad to see there is very sensible point of view on the as well from few Indian poster that do see the reality through all the hoop la.. Quite refreshing.. Often it is the usual over excitement over pacifying statements and dozens of threads over false assurances from Western diplomats doing their job.. Issuing diplomatic statements

Today Lok Sabha speaker has chaired a session of the global summit of speakers of Parliament in the UN General Assembly and has discussed critical issues of UNSC reforms, terrorism, peacekeeping and climate change with the UN Chief

She stressed that India strongly believes that democratic norms must percolate in the institutions of global governance including the UN and an early reform of the UN and expansion of the Security Council is an important priority for India.

India has called on the UN member states to build upon the progress made towards reforming the Security Council, warning them against continuing to "cocoon" from the enormity of the changes underway and having no framework for "setting our house in order". "It is unnatural and abnormal that even as the fundamental asymmetry between today’s global reality and the primary global governance mechanism relating to peace and security grows, we have confined ourselves to monologues rather than dialogue," India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Syed Akbaruddin said here yesterday.

As the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) on UN Security Council reforms commenced this year, Akbaruddin highlighted the progress and convergence already made over the years, saying in 2015, a total number of 122 member states had contributed to the framework document and enunciated their ideas for a reformed Security Council. In 2016 even more member states enunciated their positions on the reforms issue and worked together to find convergences, which formed the basis of an elements paper on working methods and the relationship between General Assembly and Security Council presented by the chair of the 70th IGN session.

"At that stage, no one questioned how many spoke and how many did not; why go down that path now," he said at the informal meeting of the General Assembly on the Intergovernmental Negotiation on increase in membership of Security Council. "I join many of my colleagues in highlighting that the process at this stage has all the conditions to build on the work of previous sessions and to move forward based on the work already done by your predecessors," he said. Akbaruddin stressed that it is now time to be "interactive, negotiate, discuss, resolve issues" and move forward on the very crucial and important issue.

"The formation of the Group of Friends demonstrates that many, many of us are willing to reach out and engage. We therefore urge you to lead this process into the phase of full-fledged negotiations, after all you are tasked for this purpose," he said. Akbaruddin said the result of "our inability" to progress is that while the prime example of anachronism – the Security Council - “may meet more and more, its actions now matter less and less. "It also represents fewer and fewer of those who it is supposed to act on behalf of – 'we the people'. Hence the Security Council’s effectiveness and efficacy is questionable and its credibility and legitimacy are at a low," he said.

He emphasised that it is "not normal and not natural" that UN member states "continue to cocoon ourselves" from the enormity of the changes underway and "articulate views endlessly with no framework for setting our house in order". "It is not natural that we ignore the interconnectivity of all that we do here in this organization and the repercussions of running such a system with a fundamental legitimacy deficit," he said. He also criticised that multilateral interactions on the UNSC reform process proceeded without having a negotiating document on the table.

"There doesn’t exist an example in the history of multilateral interaction of states where any treaty or agreement has been achieved without a text on the table," he said. Akbaruddin said at a time of growing dismay with the existing international order, "our persistent inability" to move the reform process forward is viewed as the inability of the multilateral system to fix what is broken. "We are at a cross road from where reform is the only way to maintain relevance. It is time now to do the natural and the normal thing. It is time to follownormal procedures and multilateral practices," he said.
