US spy planes continue to violate Pak airspace
Sunday, July 13, 2008
PESHAWAR: Despite a strong protest lodged by Pakistan with the US-led Nato forces in Afghanistan over attack on the border town of Angoor Adda, a US fighter aircraft and pilotless spy planes again intruded into Pakistan's airspace in Bajaur, and North and South Waziristan tribal agencies on Saturday.
Official and tribal sources informed this correspondent that a US fighter aircraft intruded about five kilometres into Pakistan's airspace near Nawa Pass area in the militant-controlled Bajaur Agency.
They said the plane flew over the border area and returned to Afghanistan's Kunar province. The sources said the residents panicked at the arrival of the fighter aircraft.
Similarly, sources from Razmak, Mirali and Miramshah in North Waziristan also informed The News that a US spy plane entered Pakistan's airspace in the morning and flew over these towns from 8 am to 10 am.
Also, sources from Makeen, Kotkai and Shakai in the adjoining South Waziristan told this correspondent that a drone was seen flying over these towns.
In Makeen, a bordering town between South and North Waziristan tribal regions, the sources said the spy plane was flying at such a low altitude that militants led by Baitullah Mehsud fired shots from their 12.7mm guns at it.
"These guns which are usually fitted on to pick-up trucks were used to target the plane but it immediately changed its location and remained safe," said a local villager Bahadur Khan from Makeen.
Meanwhile, militants in Bajaur attacked paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) soldiers on the border area with Afghanistan. The troops returned the attack and fired mortar and artillery shells at the suspected hideouts of militants led by Maulana Faqir Mohammad.
There were, however, no details about the losses suffered by the militants.
