US should ask Pakistan to lay off from Kashmir: Expert.
8 NOV, 2012, 11.33AM IST, PTI

It is time the US declare that Pakistan has no claim on Kashmir and that the decision of the then King of Kashmir to accede is final.

WASHINGTON: As Obama Administration gears itself for its second term, an eminent American expert on South Asian affairs has said that it is time the US declare that Pakistan has no claim on Kashmir and that the decision of the then King of Kashmir to accede is final.

Reflecting the changing mood of think-tank and experts in US, the eminent expert in an article in the prestigious Foreign Policy magazine argued that the US should stop seeking to buy Pakistan off with civilian aid or military assistance and make it clear that it will hold Islamabad responsible for any kind of proliferation of nuclear materials that occurs.

"The United States must frankly concede that it has subsidised and incentivised Pakistan to adopt this insane path to security," said C Christine Fair, assistant professor at Georgetown University's Security Studies Program in the Edmund A Walsh School of Foreign Service.

"Pakistan's security managers believe that the United States cannot punish Pakistan for its use of terrorism as a policy tool, but this is exactly what the United States must do.

"While this is not a risk-free proposition, the next administration should consider taking the following steps to deprive Pakistan of the coercive power it covets," she wrote.

According to Fair, Washington must recognize that Pakistan's nuclear weapons coerce both India and the US.

US intervention in the region's frequent crises has shielded Pakistan from bearing the direct cost of its misadventures.

"The United States must remove itself from the Indo-Pakistan equation by declaring that it no longer entertains Pakistan's central claims on Kashmir.

"Pakistan was not entitled to Kashmir, the legality of Pakistan's claims is specious and always has been. The king of Kashmir had a right to accede to India, which he exercised.

"The accession was prompted by the invasion of Pakistani marauders that enjoyed extensive direct civilian and military support," Fair said.

"Equally important, the US should rubbish any notion that Pakistan has a positive role to play in ameliorating the suffering of Kashmiris, due to the decades of terrorism it has sponsored in Kashmir and beyond.

"The United States should instead focus its energiesBSE 2.54 % on persuading New Delhi to make right by the reasonable and constitutional demands of its Kashmiri citizenry.

"This will put India on the spot to follow through and consolidate a hard-won peace," she wrote.

US should ask Pakistan to lay off from Kashmir: Expert - The Economic Times

Though The Economic Times is a respected publication yet the Title is misleading.

Well,Atleast I was misled.
Do not see Obama even trying to do that,as they need Pakistan for an exit from Afghanistan that is worth a decade of war.

.
This would be the biggest boost to Indo US relations

. .
Oh US will never do that, it serves it no purpose other than antagonizing Pakistan.. The lip service which US did for gaining Pakistan's support has stopped so much that we see such articles now..

.
Its just a thought. No one in the west would like to see that there are no issues between India-Pak, India-China, China-Japan etc etc. They are making $$$ out of us and they don't want to stop this assured source of income and power.

.
heheheh. the Pakistan power play has already been posted and as usual Indian pathetic media has woken up too late to twist the article and make it sounds like about Kashmir.

Anyway.

US should have a military base in Indian Occupied Kashmir and use it as an edge against China
:D

For your bolded part, do you think India is as stupid as Pakistan?

Just bickering, Kashmir will remain disputed for the foreseeable future..

Just bickering, Kashmir will remain disputed for the foreseeable future..

If india can station israeli F16s in Jammu and kashmir why not US F18s or F22 raptors ?

.
I think America should take care of it's troops in Afghanistan and pray that they leave the afghan land safely rather than asking Pakistan to leave the claim over Kashmir.
Secondly, if claim of hindu raja of kashmir should be accepted than india will have to accept the claim of muslim leader of hyderabad state and handover hyderabad to pakistan.:cheesy:

She could have been more forthcoming in what Delhi has to make right by the reasonable and constitutional demands of Kashmiris? The Kashmiris have the same powers as what other states have and the 2008 elections were considered everyone including UNHCR as a fair one. Besides that, they enjoy article 370

There are few restrictions like the 1971 newspaper incitements to offenses act, AFSPA. There are Kashmir Pandit resettlement which needs to be addressed and few human rights violations needs to be investigated and beyond that, there is nothing to be granted to the Kashmiris.

On the other hand, the GOI owes it to Indians to repeal the article 370.

.
Technically, USA perception towards Kashmir was seen more leaning towards India, due to Kashmir King acceeding to India.
