Alaska F-22s deployed to Pacific even as tensions escalate between China, Japan

Alaska’s fleet of F-22 fighter jets and their elite pilots have been deployed to an airbase in the Pacific U.S. territory of Guam, according to officials at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage.

There's 40 F-22s at Elmendorf... so you have to assume 40 F-22s are now at Guam.

Stupid Pentagon raising tensions for nothing.

They are not stupid but bound by treaty. They have to support Japan. And there is a strong reason to do so. If they don't support country like Japan, other countries will have doubt regarding US being their ally and their support.

Deterrence is more likely than tensions.

The US is playing some interesting politic here, just this two weeks:

"We take absolutely no position on who is right, and we do believe that both sides need to try to resolve this."
Gary Locke said last week.

“But the United States, as a matter of policy, does not take a position with regards to competing sovereignty claims.
” Said Pannetta told announced this week while he's visiting Japan.

Japan might be the pawn who'll get hurt the most at the end if the US sells her out.

Japan is pretty much screwed economically whatever they do. If war breaks out, even economical war, they are done overnight.

This tension should be solved by maturity and a cup of tea! But someone update me about this I'm a little behind.

I think Japan pretty much knows what stance to take, whom to believe. They didn't just wake up and thought, lets go to those islands and rattle China. These decisions are made considering everything, from support of every ally nation to being completely isolated. They carry out war game simulations, check their reserves, prepare for worst, think of strategically, economically and any other aspect that may play a crucial role.

If US leaves ally like Japan in middle of this conflict, they can say goodbye to have countries like India which they want to make major ally in the region especially because of China.

Isn't what the US want?

China'll be hurt but she can manage without too much different while Japan, on an other hand, is really in deep doodoo.

So you say, based on the Chinese government's attempt to tamper it down it tells otherwise. Many Chinese depend on foreign investment especially the Japanese. Theres a reason for the Made in China products on Japanese brands. But imagine the closure of such factories if this keeps up. Millions of Chinese out of work. The economy collapses and the Chinese govt. could be overthrown. The Chinese govt. knows.

I think you are over estimating politicians. IMO they mainly did this to shut up the crazy Tokyo mayor and didn't think of what China would think... they only saw this as a domestic thing, not an international one.

Like I said, Oldman, China is going to be hurt but not fatally. If Japanese companies do leave there will be many more from other countries will take up the slags and if not, China has enough resources to pick up some of the companies. After a few years thing will be back to normal. Japan's market is big but Chinese market will get bigger soon enough.

On the other hand Japan will plunge into recession and just like the 80s she might not ever come back.

@ Vitchilo

You hit it right on the nail. No one, including most Chinese would've though China reacts this way. In fact Noda's intention was to calm the Chinese down and takes the eccentric Tokyo mayor out of the lime light and was thinking China would take it as such.
