A bi-partisan group of US senators introduced a bill on 26 April to prevent the transfer of the Lockheed Martin F-35A to Turkey.

The bill would also block Turkey’s role as a maintenance depot for the aircraft, according to a press release issued by the senators.

The bill was introduced on 26 April by Sen James Lankford, a Republican from Oklahoma, Sen Jeanne Shaheen, a Democrat from New Hampshire, and Sen Thom Tillis, a Republican from North Carolina.

Turkey, a NATO ally and partner in fighting ISIS, has ordered a total of 100 conventional take-off and landing F-35As. The first batch of 14 are already purchased, with deliveries scheduled to begin later this year. A total of 30 F-35As are scheduled for delivery to the Turkish Air Force by the end of 2022.

Sen Lankford said that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s disregard for the rule of law, diminishment of individual freedoms, consolidation of power and “strategic decisions” have fallen out of line with US interests. He also cited the imprisonment of American pastor Andrew Brunson, who is accused of helping the Kurdistan Workers’ Party in a failed coup attempt against Erdoğan. Brunson denies the allegations.

“These factors make the transfer of sensitive F-35 technology and cutting-edge capabilities to Erdogan’s regime increasingly risky,” said Sen Lankford. “Furthermore, the Turkish government continues to move closer and closer to Russia, as they hold an innocent American pastor, Andrew Brunson, in prison to use him as a pawn in political negotiations. The United States does not reward hostage-taking of American citizens; such action instead will be met with the kind of punitive measures this bill would enact.”

In a joint statement, Sen Shaheen outlined the terms under which she would withdraw her support of the bill and agree to transfer of the F-35 to Turkey.

“Erdogan and his government must abide by the rule of law within his own country and abroad, and release Pastor Andrew Brunson and other Americans unlawfully held in Turkey,” she said. “There must also be an immediate end to the harassment and detainment of locally-employed staff at the US mission. Until that occurs, I’ll continue to join with Senators Lankford and Tillis to call for punitive action, including blocking the transfer of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.”

The move by the senators comes one week after a senior US diplomat threatened to use the Lockheed Martin F-35 programme as a retaliatory tool against Turkey for acquiring a sophisticated air defence system from Russia, the Almaz-Antey S-400 Triumf system. The S-400 is Russia's most advanced surface-to-air missile system on the export market. It's advertised with an "anti-stealth range" up to 81nm (150km).

Lankford and Shaheen have previously worked together to counter Turkey’s alleged abuses, including an announcement on 19 April to pursue targeted sanctions against Turkish officials in the Fiscal Year 2019 State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs spending bill. That proposal was also in response to the imprisonment of American pastor Brunson.

Beautiful toy.
Why an irrelevant question like that..? why should I be happy or sad about it.. ? It is the news..
IMO the bill will not go through.. but if it does, Turkey has it alternative,, but will lose a lot of 5th generation ToT..

turkey should buy su57 and s400 in response

This will be a major setback for Turkey and it will just be the beginning of many such blockade and hardware sanctions in various projects. Turkish militarily establishment will blame Eradgon for this. When for the last time Turkey faced such sanctions from US ? Anyways if Turkey has already paid the money for the first batch of F-35s i.e. 14 planes as per the article, than it will be a bit difficult to get this bill passed in US Congress. But nevertheless, ominous signs for Turkish airforce.

Easy statement without any substance. Their entire airforce and infrastructure is based on US/NATO standards. It will take years to observe any Russian aircraft and their standards.

Jewish Lobby activated but if Turkey is out then US will suffer a lot and say bye bye to its front line ally of NATO, this will also crush NATO reputation

The last embargo was right after Cyprus intervention and that led to the rebirth of Turkish defence Industry... Now 50 years later 4 or 5 of those companies are in top 100 and have joint-projects with Lockheed Martin :)

Just a month ago they uploaded this:

Greek and Armenian lobbies are mostly behind this defamation.

As far as I know, Turkish pilots are already in the US training and the first 2 planes are planned for June or July 2018 but they will arrive in 2019 together with the pilots :)

Joint projects with top American companies. That's the key here. All this joint ventures will be put to an end if this bill gets passed since after this, you know all kind of militarily cooperation will be restricted a great deal. We know it since we face it with time to time.

It is a proposed bill; in their system, anyone can propose a bill. There are idiots who want to sanction us as well for acquiring S-400 from Russia.

Do you really think that Lockheed Martin will let them do that? All corporate games man.

. .
What Putin said about US is true, The US doesn't want allies, They only want vessels.

.
That would be definitelly good thing to happen! It will prevent TR to obtain 5th gen jets for few more years BUT all those billions which were ready for F35 could've be spent at TFX, speed up the R&D and build of reall jet etc.
The Americans know that but their target is just to cause you some delays which is again time they may use to stage new coup or similar to overtake te country again.... Be carefull and work hard to achive your full defence independance, if any muslim country can do that then it's Turkey. I'm sure TFX will be good enough to compete with all US or EU jets but then just imagine when you buy 100 jets and pay billions that money will stay in country, it will help new projects and in same time no enemy of Turkey, be sure they are all your enemies in real they just talk nice in front of you but none of them likes you just because you're muslims, will get those billions...

.
, Turkey should invest on Russian fifth generation jet which is 90% completed project.

I said many times US politicians are not real policy makers. They are puppet.

Interesting thing is that India ,a close ally of Israel , going to get F35 jets even though its not nato member.

And NATO member country Turkey was refused . lol
