HONG KONG, April 19 (AFP) A landmark nuclear energy deal between the United States and India is in jeopardy because New Delhi wants key clauses rewritten, a senior US official told the Financial Times daily Thursday. US State Department officials say India's tough stance is threatening to unravel the agreement, which gives the South Asian state unprecedented access to nuclear fuel without having to sign a non-proliferation treaty. “We are disappointed with the pace and seriousness of the civil nuclear negotiations with India,” Nicholas Burns, the US under secretary of state, told the daily. According to people close to the talks, Indian negotiators are contesting a clause which states that the United States would withdraw civil nuclear fuel supplies and equipment if India breached its unilateral moratorium on nuclear testing, the FT said.(Posted @ 09:45 PST)

US is giving energy deal as a political bargain not as a humantarian aid, in return they expect to use India against China, and they need to keep these clauses as if India tries to be smart at any given time, they can cut the life line.

It is simple the beggars can no choosers.

You accept it and get cheap energy and fulfill their agenda, you reject it and get in peace with hunger. But I think Indian govt wont insist and go ahead with deal.

U.S. energy firms are to lose out. Russia already sells us nuclear fuel; and Europe is itching to too!

IAEA is hot on Russia's *** for selling you the nuclear fuel. Russia had to justify it's last sale by stating Indian reactors would be in danger if they don't get some much needed fuel.

In any case it would be a good thing for regional stability.

If India goes in to US lap, they would use India against China and Pakistan where their intrests are at stake, if India goes on Russian side then she would have to resolve the regional issues to become a part of new block.

Petition against India-US N-deal filed in SC

NEW DELHI: India’s Supreme Court is to hear a petition that maintains that the country’s civilian nuclear deal with the US could threaten national security, a report said on Saturday.

The suit, lodged on Friday in the apex court, states there is an “immediate need to examine” the national security and sovereignty implications of the deal, the Press Trust of India reported. The petition, known as a “public interest litigation” was lodged by MN Ramamurthy, a member of the Mumbai-based Forum for Integrated National Security.

The petition demands that the proposed agreement’s full text be released to the public and that the government refrain “from hurriedly executing any agreement” with the United States until it can be examined by a committee appointed by the Supreme Court.

The nuclear pact was passed by the US Congress in December despite some misgivings about India’s refusal to sign a global test ban treaty. However, differences have persisted, chiefly over a clause that says the United States would withdraw civil nuclear fuel supplies and equipment if India breaches its unilateral moratorium on nuclear testing.

India has agreed as part of the deal to separate its civilian and military nuclear facilities and allow inspection of the civilian ones. afp
