US, Russia vie to sell choppers to IAF

Technology has changed a lot. Our Mi-26 are old so they have problems. Now IAF have better policy on buying systems with logistics. They consider life time support and replaceable units during signing a deal.

When operating in rough terrain Mi-26 did better than others and it still cost much less. New Mi-26 will be with modern technologies so the previous problems will not withstand here while retaining previous superb lifting capability.

If operating in difficult terrain is a problem then it wont make it past the selection phase.

If it is selected the spares wont be a problem because the companies that will be making the spares are in a better financial position they were in during the late 80's and early 90's. the companies should be able to deliver the parts need on time and in needed quantities.

i think india has already 4 mi-26 and if u analyze the both choppers you found mi-26 is much better than Chinook...however american choppers require less maintenance than russian. so life time cost is lesser than russian chopper...

Lifetime cost is a very important factor, so is availability in service. The 4 Helos had a very low availability. What is use is an asset if it is not available when required; granted that a Mi-26 has greater payload than a Chinook. Whatever we may think sitting at our keyboards, the IAF knows what it needs.

i think by loosing Russia India will face lot of problems in world affairs.when Russian will lost contract by India than they will turn to anti-Indian countries.America is not the friend of any country

Dont worry my dear friend , russia already has a lot on its table from india , even if our biggest foreign contract ie mmrca goes to a european or american contender
let me explain how
200-250 PAKFA which india is part funding , and whose deal is valued at 30 billion USD including development cost
Contract for 3 More Talwar class frigates valued at 1.8 billion USD
Now what russia has won this year from india
29 MIG29K fighters valued at 1.6 billion USD for the navy
42 SU30MKI valued at 3.0-3.5 billion USD
You can add all these deals up , then you will see that there value is double of all other contracts where US and Europe have an upper hand

so it is unlikely for Russia to sell arms to enemy country

Actually its because our FM and RM (Raksha Mantri) are both sticklers for procedures, the media is more vigilant and fear of public opinion (shades of Bofors). And the scenario is quite different from the past, India is making 'big-bucks' acquisitions; in the past India had to scour the world for sellers (apart from USSR). Now the customer is king (at least more than earlier). Witness the testing requirement for single vendor deals like C-17 transports.
The mantra seems to be- show me the stuff, i'll show you the money.

This is no save ur a$$ stuff.
Who is teh client?, IAF?, who is buying? IAF...why Raksha mantri is worried about what goes under media scrutiny?

Coz at the end of day its IAF which will give it specification for what it wants to buy and they can do it without a competition. You are already using Mi 26. Just evaluate Chinook and see if its better then what you have, if its better then buy it if not dont buy it.

You are only prolonging the time line here, howlong did it take for Brazil to close their fighter deal and with UAE....

It makes sense for a bigger competion like MRCA, still not much sense. However for 15 choppers?, I mean it looking like IAF is more likelly window shopping and while being undecided like a confused customer who doesnt know what to buy..

Its a waste of time.....
Show us the stuff and we will buy it can be done without a competition...think about it....

as i read news from afgan that their 1 nato ch-47 stuck in afgan valley and it will be lifted by Mi-26. Ist time hear one heavy lift helicopter lift another heavy life.

In my opinion we should go for the apache long bow for attack and go for Mi-26 for heavy lift as each of the above mentioned choppers dominates the other contender in its respective category.

Not necessarily, these helicopters have to be used in various regions all over India, so life trials could find out weak points that are not mentioned in presentations, or simulators.
Not to mention that it is an advantage for us, if the vendors has to underprice eachother to get the deal.
