The US has recognized Japan's sovereignty over islands which Japan terms as the northern territories while Russia claims them as the southern Kuril islands.

US State Department spokesperson Marie Harf reiterated US' position on the territorial dispute between Tokyo and Moscow at a briefing on Wednesday in connection with Russian military drills in the disputed territory beginning earlier this week. But she did not comment directly on Russia’s latest military exercises on Kunashiri and Etorofu islands.

Moscow launched drills Tuesday on the long-contested islands, mobilizing more than 1,000 troops, five helicopters and over 100 vehicles.

Crazy. They don't even recognize Japan's sovereignty over Diaoyudao. Maybe that will change too?

Didn't the USA accept Soviet sovereignty of the islands after WW2???...i read somewhere that Stalin was given assurance of that for launching the Manchurian offensive

you reely believe there will a third world war.:lol:

A 3rd WW, if it happens, may not be a physical war, this is the 21th century. Coming from someone who quotes Wikipedia all the time, your shallowness is expected :coffee:

Of course, we humans as you know are very peacful. We never wage war on another, and all history is a lie too :D
come on, when ww1 ended people thought it would be a lesson, that people would realize how terrible war is. But then ww2 started. In history there have always been wars and always will be. Of course nobody wants a ww3, but you can't say its impossible. But in 10 years, maybe in a 100 who knows

Yes, they are populated by mostly Japanese Ainu.

Why are they Japanese? They don't hold Japanese citizenship. Plus, note what they say in a letter written to Putin in 2004:

Камчатское Время

From Yandex translate:
A LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT
Alex NAKAMURA quite emotionally spoke about what made him send a letter to the President of the Russian Federation, in which he gave convincing arguments about why Russia should not transfer part of the Kuril Islands to the Japanese. According to Alexei NAKAMURA, in his time the people of Ainu suffered from Japan's brutal genocide and extermination. "The tragedy of my people, - says Alex, - comparable only to that of the tragedy of the indigenous inhabitants of North America - Indians."

Even though Japanese have considerable Ainu blood, these native Ainu still remember think of them as Korean Yayoi invaders. They haven't forgotten :)
