US pulls plug on Pakistani 'Sesame Street'

The United States has cut funding to a popular Pakistani version of the children's program "Sesame Street" amid allegations of fraud and abuse, a US official said Tuesday.

The program, run under the umbrella of the US-based Sesame Workshop by a local theater group, had been awarded some $20 million in funds from the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

Known as "Sim Sim Hamara" it included some of the furry puppets beloved by children in the West such as Elmo as well as local characters including Baily, a fluffy donkey who wants to be a pop star, and a crocodile, Haseen-o-Jameel, who loves words, rhymes, and songs. But through an anti-fraud hotline set up by the US, Washington received "what we believe were credible allegations of fraud and abuse by the Rafi Peer Theatre Workshop, which manages the 'Sesame Street' program in Pakistan," a State Department spokesman, Mark Toner, said. An investigation had been launched into the allegations and Rafi Peer had been sent "a letter that terminates the project agreement," he added. Toner refused to go into the nature of the allegations against the project, which he said had already spent some $6.7 million of its funds. "We do acknowledge the program is beneficial. But, we had what we believe were credible allegations. So rather than to continue to throw good money after bad, we thought it was prudent to cut off this program and wait for the results of the investigation," he told journalists. Sesame Workshop said in a statement that it was "surprised and dismayed to learn about the serious allegations made against Rafi Peer Theatre Workshop." It added that it was awaiting the outcome of the investigation and did "not know the specific details of these allegations." "It is our hope that the achievements of Sim Sim Hamara, and the gains we have made in the lives of children in Pakistan, will carry on." But Faizaan Peerzada, head of the Rafi Peer Theatre Workshop, told AFP he had been informed the program was ending due to lack of funds and said it was only through media reports that he discovered allegations of fraud and abuse. "We have been in the field for the last 35 years. We totally deny the allegations," he told AFP by telephone from Lahore. "We have not been shown any evidence or proof to support the allegations," he added. One audit report had been approved and the second was due in July, he said. "We were suddenly told that they were ending it as they do not have additional funds." It was the second time that a foreign version of "Sesame Street" has run into trouble after earlier problems with a Palestinian program. "Let me be very clear that we strongly support the goal of... 'Sesame Street' and the Sesame Workshop worldwide," Toner said. "These are valuable programs, teaching kids worldwide values as well as math, reading skills."

USA never funds anything positive.. they will give you milk with poison mixed. What about VOA? Why the H3ll they give money to media and channels??? We will be the delighted the day we know USA presence in Pakistan is reduced to its embassy with staff of 80 people only and that should be the target.

The difference being that it is in Indians who are always going on about "Shining India" and looking down on Pakistan. On the other hand, the problems Pakistan has are admitted by us.

Are you ready to collect more taxes from Pakistanis, graphican? Are you prepared for the next earthquake or flood? Are you ready to throw away the drought-resistant strains of grains that the U.S. developed and provided to S. Asia since the 1960s?

The United States has cut funding to a popular Pakistani version of the children's program "Sesame Street" amid allegations of fraud and abuse but instead of media news, strong proofs, TIP reports of massive corruption they continue to aid corrupt zardari & co until recently when they refuse to obey US orders. Why this double standard?

It would be good if US had planned to help Pakistanis instead of bribing corrupt leaders, US would be popular if they had take part in development of Pakistan, building schools/hospitals, bring investments, help in railway & power sectors, give trade preferense to Pakistanis. But they choose corrupt leaders & see today(lets not deny the fact) that US is hated in every street of Pakistan & instead China is very popular & loved by almost every Pakistani & even Russia & some European countries are getting popular.

Simple answer: No we're absolutely not!
On the other hand; What's the premium we need to pay for the drought-resistant strain of grains? Soul and free will?

.
no need thanks USA cut ever connection with us we feel happy every day of your cuts :D

The positive aspect is that our little children will now know how Unreliable USA is and hopefully they will grow up to be free of reliance on USA.
