US Pressures South Korea to Speak Out Against Dispute in South China Sea

17:24 04.06.2015
US diplomat Daniel Russel made a remark calling on South Korea to speak up against China's activities in the South China Sea.

A US diplomat called on South Korea to speak up regarding the dispute in the South China Sea.

Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Russel made the remark Wednesday during a seminar on Korea, denouncing China’s activities in the South China Sea.

"The role for the Republic of Korea is the role of a major stakeholder in the international order. It's the role of a country of laws. It's the role of a trading nation. It's a role of a country that has flourished under the international system," Russel said during the seminar co-sponsored by Center for Strategic and International Studies and the Korea Foundation, media reported.

Critics say that Russel's comments are putting pressure on South Korea ahead of summit talks between President Park Geun-hye and US President Barack Obama in Washington later this month.

The United States has repeatedly expressed concern over China's growing assertiveness in the region, specifically the reclamation of the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, an area subject to overlapping territorial claims from Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan, the Philippines and Vietnam.

China on the other hand has repeatedly stressed that it has always adhered to the principles of international law and that the country is not going to harm other states.

'Don't Tell Me What to Do': China Warns US Over South China Sea Meddling

Beijing has insisted that the majority of the islands in this part of the Pacific Ocean are its sovereign territory. The authorities have defended the construction in the Spratly region as a legal and peaceful endeavor that will improve security in the region to the benefit of all.

China has also warned that Washington's meddling in the Asia-Pacific might upset regional stability.

Regarding South Korea’s involvement in the situation, the country’s ministry official stressed that South Korea remains neutral about the matter for now.

With China becoming closer to South Korea and South Korea more distant from Japan do you see China becoming more critical of North Korea? My understanding is that China has little love for the country, they just prop it up because they're afraid Korean reunification will enhance US power.

Enhance? What would be the American excuse be for continued presence in Japan and Korea be if North Korea is gone?

However, China currently lacks the power to challenge the US directly. When the time comes, a good move for China is to take North Korea, and force America out that way. Keeping the North until America leaves and while holding the North, pour in investments and agents to make sure Korea will be a Chinese ally when it's all said and done.

Korean reunification is too soon. China will decide the fate of Korea, after all, we did pay a high price for the North.

Can you really trust Kim though?

China has just signed an FTA. Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Russel's pressure is realistically too little to move Korea against its own greater national interests.

Why drag the Koreans into the SCS issue? Would you drag your friends into trouble that has nothing to do with them?

.
the unification of south&north Korea will happen only if
1: China is too weak and US is so powerful.
or 2: China is powerful enough to kick US force out of east Asia..
Other wise, both China and US want north Korea to exist.
keep a safe distance and avoid direct contact that may trigger a worse conflict..
