New Delhi: Close on the heels of a series of exercises conducted jointly by the Indian and US navies, US Navy chief Admiral Michael Mullen arrived here Tuesday on a visit that is indicative of the growing military ties between the two countries.

Mullen, who is designated chief of naval operations (CNO), will be accorded a guard of honour at the South Block defence headquarters here Wednesday, after which he will hold discussions with Defence Minister A.K. Antony and Defence Secretary Shekhar Dutt.

The Indian Navy chief, Admiral Sureesh Mehta will conduct a detailed briefing for Mullen, who will thereafter meet the Indian Army chief, Gen. J.J. Singh, and the Indian Air Force chief, Air Chief Marshal Fali Major.

Mullen will travel to Mumbai Thursday to visit naval establishments in the city before departing Friday, an Indian Navy spokesman here said Tuesday.

A flotilla of five frontline Indian Navy ships, which is currently on a two-month deployment to southeast and east Asian waters, April 6-11 conducted the annual Malabar series of exercises off Japan with ships of the US Pacific Command that were meant to test their ability to quickly react to emergencies - military or otherwise.

On Monday, the Indian Navy ships staged their first trilateral exercise, also off Japan, with vessels of the US Seventh Fleet and the Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force.

As part of the deployment that concludes May 23, the Indian Navy ships have already exercised with their counterparts from Singapore, the Philippines, and China. They will now conduct a similar drill with the Russian and Vietnamese navies.

"The Russians do things differently from the US. For us, the exercises will provide rich pickings as we aim to imbibe the best practices from foreign navies," the Indian Navy assistant chief, Rear Admiral Pradeep Chauhan, explained.

Mullen's is the latest in a series of high-powered visits by US civil and military officials.

The US Pacific Command chief, Admiral Gary Roughead; the Chairman Of The Joint Chiefs Of Staff, Gen. Peter Pace; and the Deputy Under Secretary of the Air Force Bruce S. Lemkin are among those who have come calling in recent times.

Earlier this month, the global and regional security environment figured prominently during the first meeting of the India-US joint working group (JWG) on defence.

The JWG was envisaged in the New Framework for India-US Defence Relationship signed by then Indian defence minister Pranab Mukherjee and his US counterpart, Donald Rumsfeld, in June 2005. It conducts a midyear review of the work overseen by the Defence Policy Group (DPG), the apex dialogue mechanism for the India-US defence relationship.

India last year completed the big-ticket purchase of the landing ship USS Trenton that the Indian Navy is scheduled to induct in the next few months. This apart, prominent US defence contractors have been hard-selling an array of military hardware to the Indian military.

Prominent among what is on offer are the F-16 and F-18 combat jets, the Hercules C-130J Super Hercules transport, the Orion P3 and Boeing P8 maritime reconnaissance aircraft, the MH-60R maritime dominance helicopter, the Patriot PAC-3 missile defence system, the ship-mounted Littoral Combat Solution (LCS) system, and the MK-41 vertical launching system (VLS) for firing missiles at sea.
