Well, nothing is surprising here.
East Asian states are well adept at playing the ride the mule game with respect to the US. Once it stumbles, they will disembark. This is explained by the high level of trade and technology interconnectivity in East Asia, especially in NEA.
US economic war on China is just one aspect of it. Everybody knows that it won't be a Japan 2.0 as in the 1980s. At that time, there was no market alternative. Hence, Japan had to ride on the mule in return for rolling down political sovereignty pants.
