US is no longer a full democracy, EIU warns
http://www.cnbc.com/2017/01/25/us-is-no-longer-a-full-democracy-eiu-warns.html

The U.S. has been demoted from a full democracy to a flawed democracy for the first time, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

Every year, the firm's Democracy Index provides a snapshot of global democracy by scoring countries on five categories: electoral process and pluralism; civil liberties; the functioning of government; political participation; and political culture. Nations are then classified under four types of governments: full democracy, flawed democracy, hybrid regime and authoritarian regime.

America's score fell to 7.98 last year from 8.05 in 2015, below the 8.00 threshold for a full democracy, the EIU announced in a report on Wednesday. That put the world's largest economy on the same footing as Italy, a country known for its fractious politics.

A flawed democracy is a country with free elections but weighed down by weak governance, an underdeveloped political culture and low levels of political participation, according to the EIU. Other flawed democracies in 2016 included Japan, France, Singapore, South Korea and India, the report said.

However, Washington can't point fingers at President Donald Trump for the nation's downgrade.

"The U.S. has been teetering on the brink of becoming a flawed democracy for several years, and even if there had been no presidential election in 2016, its score would have slipped below 8.00," the report explained. Instead, dwindling trust in government, elected representatives and political parties is to blame.

"Trust in political institutions is an essential component of well-functioning democracies. Yet surveys by Pew, Gallup and other polling agencies have confirmed that public confidence in government has slumped to historic lows in the U.S. This has had a corrosive effect on the quality of democracy," the report found.

Say what...???

Whoever in the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) wrote that needs to go back to skool.

All democracies are flawed democracies. Examine any democracy deep enough and you will find flaws, plural, not singular.

For example, everyone loves to cite how Switzerland is superior to the US in terms of democracy. But the President of the Swiss Confederation is not democratically elected. The office rotates among the seven members of the Swiss Federal Council and the person is ineligible for reelection.

Why is that not a flaw ?

Whatever arguments are there for the defense of the Swiss on how they practices their democratic principles, the US can do the same for our version of democratic principles.

So what would be a perfect democracy ? How about Marxism ? In theory, there are elections in Marxism. The Soviet Union and China have been working hard for decades trying to reach that perfection.

The bottom line is that this article is outright stupid. No one outside of that office take it seriously.

I'ld still rather be in a flawed democracy than in hybrid or authoritarian regimes ....

@Sliver @gambit
The Democracy Index is an index compiled by the UK based Economist Intelligence Unit, that measures the state of democracy in 167 countries, of which 166 are sovereign states and 165 are UN member states. The index was first produced for 2006, with updates for 2008, 2010 and the following years since then. The index is based on 60 indicators grouped in five different categories measuring pluralism, civil liberties, and political culture.

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) is a British business within The Economist Group providing forecasting and advisory services through research and analysis, such as monthly country reports, five-year country economic forecasts, country risk service reports, and industry reports.
The EIU provides country, industry, and management analysis worldwide and incorporates the former Business International Corporation, a UK company acquired by its parent company in 1986. The EIU has several offices across the globe including two offices in China and one in Hong Kong.
The Economist Intelligence Unit also produces regular reports on "liveability" and cost of living of the world's major cities that receive wide coverage in international media. The Economist Intelligence Unit's Quality-of-Life Index is another noted report.

While we're at it, who are rating agencies to rate the creditworthiness of entire countries?

"Full democracy" is a fool's democracy.

Thank god US is not what it was under Barak Hussein 0bama.
Ah, I see. Is it that you resent Israel being listed even lower down the ladder among the flawed democracies? Or just that you envy the full democracies, which for the most part are European countries?

Just a made up title to give the worthless opinions of some Eurosnobs a facade of academic respectability.
Mmm, are you calling The Economist a bunch of Eurosnobs?:sarcastic:

Exactly, EUI is a British organisation under the world renowned Economist. Like many other renowned British and western organisations who classify/rank countries globallyaccording to certain parameters which varies according to institutions, the EIU isn't any different.
Anyway, I believe we should be among the "best/fullest" democracies according to EIU. :bunny: Though only Scandinavian countries are the real "fullest democracies" according to EIU :(

Sorry @Taygibay , @Vergennes , @Louiq XIV you and the U.S, S.Korea, Japan etc are all "flawed" democracies:p:
:D
