A jailed US-Iranian and his wife have been formally charged with hosting parties in Tehran, while another couple were given the death penalty for running a ‘‘cult’’, the Tehran prosecutor said Monday.

No names were given, but the dual national and his wife are thought to be the high-profile owners of an art gallery in the capital that regularly hosted events for dignitaries and foreign diplomats prior to their arrest last summer.

The case ‘‘is related to a woman and man who provided alcoholic drinks, and encouraged corruption and debauchery by holding mixed parties,’’ said prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi. He said 4,000 liters of alcohol had been found in the basement of their building in northern Tehran.

The couple are known to be members of the Zoroastrian religion, who are allowed to have alcohol for private use but are banned from sharing it with Muslims.

Dolatabadi also described a separate case of a couple who ‘‘by founding a cult and attracting individuals, were active in sexual deviation.’’ They were found guilty of ‘‘corruption on Earth’’, a charge introduced after the 1979 revolution that carries the death penalty.

While moderate President Hassan Rouhani has made good on his vow to improve ties with the West through a deal to curb Iran’s nuclear programmer, his promises to ease social restrictions at home have come to nothing.

In January, Tehran’s chief prosecutor said as many as 70 ‘‘spies’’ were serving sentences in the city’s prisons -- only a handful of which have been made public. Many have been dual nationals who also hold a European or US passport -- undermining Rouhani’s call for ex-pat Iranians to return home and help rebuild the economy.

In October, US-Iranian business consultant Siamak Namazi and his 80-year-old father Baquer, a former UNICEF official, were given 10 years in prison for ‘‘espionage and collaboration with the American government’’.

Britain has frequently protested the detention of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe who was given a five-year sentence for her alleged involvement in 2009 protests, although exact charges have not been published.

She was separated from her two-year-old daughter when she was arrested last April, leaving the child stranded with her grandparents in Iran.

Ahead of a likely bid for re-election in May, Rouhani published a new ‘‘Charter of Citizens’ Rights’’ in December, but officials have admitted it has no power over conservative-dominated parts of the power structure such as the judiciary and Revolutionary Guards.

This stuff is where I draw the line. Killing someone for sex and alcohol is not right no matter what reason and that mother needs to be freed ASAP

they don't kill people for sex and alcohol in iran ..

sex and alcohol are plentily available in iran , you just have to go the islamic way to acquire them . this american couple perhaps mistook Tehran for some US city ..

So death is the answer?

another cheap alarabiya lie.
their real charge is acting against national security, selecting and recruiting spies through their connections with foreign embassies.

This makes much more sense since treason is a heavier crime.

how is it Alarabiya lie, is Alarabiya any different

how is it Alarabiya lie, is Alarabiya any different
it's a lie cause Alarabiya intentionally censored their main charge from the prosecutor interview.

The couple were receiving the name of their guests from foreign embassies in tehran and then had order to invite them and recruit them, even through putting their guests in awkward position, filming them and then blackmailing them.

Most probably they were bahai witches who served alcohol and recruited drunk people and alcoholics to spy for them. Very intelligent way of recruiting spies and not being arrested... The best source for recruiting reliable spies.
The blackmailing part is brilliant, the spy will love you for the rest of his life and will every day use all his energy and put his life in danger because of someone blackmails him/her after drinking alcohol.

Again our hardworking, handsome prosecutor rounded up spies. High IQ, PHD shines from his face.
In Iran people with blue praying sign/mark on their forehead are the most honest, hardworking, intelligent, succesfull people in the country. Their dedication and overpraying is seen in the blue mark on their forehead and their affection and honesty towards the nation, ...accepting low wage for such a job with so much responsiblity.. not having the money to buy a fit sized suit...., this all is what makes a nation great, men like him.

The reality is that they're thugs and gangsters in power and whoever supports these maniacs is not better. They murder innocents like Sattar Beheshti.

We had the umayads and genocidal mongols, now we have other brand which is named islamic republic (dawla islamiya in their native language).

That blue mark of cursed Ahriman and powerfull position explains everything, he's a vampire addicted to drinking blood and stealing peoples money. Let him enjoy because it wont last forever. These criminals will be exposed like mek/mko and sepatarist groups.

It must be pretty upset for you that no one with civilized thinking and no humans except subhumans and animals on 2 legs support your ideology. You're already a minority in Iran and you're becoming a minority of minority in a fast pace.

Live with it because those revolutionary days are over. World is a village nowadays, murderers can't hide their crimes like 50 years ago. Mentality of Iranians has changed, our belief is going towards Iran as a country and a nation. New generations differ and i've seen it with my own eyes.

You can just prolong it a little bit like force feeding someone. But even that needs money and effort. Oil is becoming less important, you need to have a strong economy to support your system, even that is difficult because strong economy changes mentality of a nation towards clerical establishment and strong economy needs transparancy... Which is again not in interest of clerical establishment. We see this clash in falsly slandering scientists and businessmen as spies to scare other scientists and businessmen. In persian we say... "moondam chikar konan".

So zaman (time) is the best medicine, as it heals everything. The Irony is you fastened demise of your parasitic ideology which was chewing on its host for 1000 years.
