US envoy visits Thar Coal project, inaugurates health facility

MITHI: The United States Consul General at Karachi Rob Silberstein on Thursday inaugurated an operating theatre facility and telemedicine services — ‘Ring-a-Doctor’ — at Islamkot’s rural health centre.

Speaking at the ceremony, he said the United States would continue to support such services for the people of Tharparkar as a goodwill gesture.

He observed that the people of Thar were not only simple, honest and peace-loving, but also patriotic citizens of the country.

The US envoy also visited community development project in Islamkot and appreciated the efforts being put in by the Thar Foundation in the taluka to meet UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs) target. He expressed the hope that Tharparkar district would soon progress in all spheres of health, education and public services in terms of development.

During his visit to the Thar Coal project’s Block-II, he went round the mining, power generation and community projects sites.

MPA Qasim Siraj Soomro and District Council Chairman Dr Ghulam Haider Samejo accompanied the envoy.

He received a briefing on the projects from Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) vice president Syed Murtaza Azhar Rizvi and Thar Foundation general manager Naseer Memon.

Mr Rizvi informed him that mining and power generation project at Block-II had been completed three months ahead of the stipulated time and that too at 20 per cent less than the approved project cost.

Mr Silberstein met a group of women dumper truck drivers, who demonstrated their driving skills by operating vehicles carrying load of 60 tonnes of coal. He also met the women workers being trained for reverse osmosis (RO) plant operation. He was taken round the New Senhri Dars model village where 172 families dislocated due to the acquiring of lands for the coal project have been resettled.

Naseer Memon informed the US envoy that the village was provided with all basic facilities like school, dispensary, community centre and RO plant, as well as a mosque and a temple. She said households in the village were provided solar energy equipment.

The consul general visited the temple, Shiv Mandir, and met local community’s elders. He also met owner of a household and presented him a souvenir of the US embassy.

During the visit, Mr Silberstein planted a sapling in Green Park and was told that 750,000 indigenous trees were being planted in the area under the ‘Thar million tree’ initiative undertaken by the public-private partnership between Sindh government and the SECMC.

It is very obvious why the US continues to invest a lot of time and effort in maintaining good relations with Sindh province. Often this happens in a very low key and off the grid manner. From aid, projects to PR stunts. The US is following through on its promise of tapping into ethnic and religious fault lines in Pakistan. PPP is a good ally of the US which serves as an important political component of the Sindh province. Often Sindh province had a difficult relation with the rest of Pakistan. We know that this province is home to restive renegade elements. The US realises these weak points. There is a strong need to monitor US moves very closely. The US has a particular interest in keeping close ties with the Hindu community in Pakistan.

I firmly believe that the US is investing in a Kurdish like scenario where they can rely on allies in the shape of renegade groups acting on their orders.

It is an open secret that the US is providing refuge to leaders belonging to PTM and BLA leaders on their home soil. Pakistan needs to be very wary of Sindhi renegade elements being used by anti-state actors which they probably already are. Excessive USAID presence in Sindh should be seen in this context.

Pakistan is lacking severely in managing these threats. My observation is that the state and security institutions lack the will to counter US presence in such places. There is lethargic mindset. Often the state turns a blind eye to US demands. Worse governments often become party in US projects which directly undermine the cause of the state.

I'm from Malatya, Eastern Anatolia. It's a place with a great history but (American) tourists are very rare here. This has changed drastically after the US has set up a radar station to detect incoming missiles from Iran: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kürecik_Radar_Station

Suddenly, we had English classes in available in Malatya, Jazz concerts, we got an American sister city, foreign students from America etc.

It's always interesting to observe how America uses its soft power together with its military might.

When Islamabad fails to invest in Sindh, outsiders will seize the opportunity. Give Sindh its due share and kindly stop using PPP as a punching bag and as a excuse for not paying proper attention to Sindh. I swear PPP will not stop the Center for using its own budget for the upliftment of Sindh. It will create a lot of goodwill in the hearts of Sindhis, and, you know, make them feel that they are also a part of Pakistan. @maximuswarrior

Your suggestions have little to do with US desire to infiltrate Pakistan.

PPP is not a friend of Pakistan. Bhutto is not here anymore. Long ago one could argue that PPP was pro-Pakistan.

I agree that Sindhi people should get their fair share, but that applies for every province.

US is already deeply embedded in Pakistan. Since 1947. The most powerful man in Pakistan, the COAS, doesn't come without the stamp of approval from Washington.

Why are you like making post like this.
USA interest is dangerous .
Are you Chinese camp or something ?
Chinese already have special place they don't need fake propagandist like you .
We are at the point where we are friends with china, usa and Russia .
Tommorow a delgation of 45 members from Russia is coming for 4 days . This is the largest delgation of its kind .
To access various projects and export .
China has also now woken up and is offering good deals unlike past where they are offering bad deals due to isolation of pakistan...
USA can invest so does China . We are investment hungry . We need more and more investment . Pakistan also provides a better opportunity for Americans to export to China as Pakistan has fta and for China to export to USA as we have large channels of export to USA .

Agree. Most deserving are Balochistan, Rural Sindh, South Punjab, KPK and FATA. In roughly that order. Where would the money come from? Punjab, especially Northern and Central part.

Same with Urdu Speaking people in Urban areas of Sindh
Agree. But not at the expense of rural areas of Sindh. But from the richest areas of Pakistan as described above.

Does Pakistan want good relations with the US or not? What's with all this paranoia?

The short answer is that Pakistan seeks no relation with the US. The long answer is that Pakistan won't tolerate US criticism towards Pakistan China cooperation.

The United States is not here for investment. It is here to curb Chinese influence.

This particular member is high on US paranoia nowadays.

Says the guy who has an F-16 picture. You must caress it before you go to sleep.

You haven't been long enough on PDF to know that my stance on US has been consistent from day one.
