US influenced Oz U-turn on uranium exports to India: report

Read more: US plays down role in uranium sales to India
US President Barack Obama has played down America's role in convincing Prime Minister Julia Gillard to sell uranium to India, arguing Australia had ''smart officials'' entirely capable of understanding India's importance as a regional player.President Obama's comments came as former prime minister John Howard backed Ms Gillard's decision to pursue policy change at Labor's looming national conference, and blamed her predecessor Kevin Rudd for the delay.

Mr Howard - who resolved to export uranium to India before he lost office in 2007 - said Australia had wasted ''five or six precious years'' because Mr Rudd scrapped the policy.

Asked about Washington's influence on the uranium decision, President Obama said: ''We have not had any influence, I suspect.'' He added that Ms Gillard did not need his advice. President Obama said uranium sales to India were compatible with the nuclear non-proliferation treaty and with international law, and Australia would make ''bilateral'' decisions regarding India in its own interests.

hafiss instead of focusing on how the USA is trying to create a monster . why don't you see this as a hand of friendship (a relative new one at that) has blossomed . see the advantages we are getting by being friendly to them .

now ask your self what is it you got with a friendship with the same USA after decades.

Just a little problem here..While Australia is considering to sell Uranium to India is being translated like that, one thing must also be considered that the same Australia already sells Uranium to China.

@ Vcheng... There are friends...and friendship does have ups & downs.india & Russia, India & Israel , India & Maldives, pak & china, pak & ksa, the us & Britain, Canada & the us,

ABCA says its all (America Britain Canada Australia)

We have had conflict with two of those, in fact we have had conflict with many of our now considered friends and allies. This willingness to let the past be the past is a strength I feel. It is also something China could learn from.

The most effective way to destroy an enemy is to make that enemy a friend.

It is a victory for both.

Hopefully the US & India gain a mutual victory as well.

So the uranium that we are recieving is to make bombs against China now, is this why Australia is interested in selling uranium to us.
what a pathetic attempt and low grade post? from you mr.
India has clasifed most of its N reactors for civilian purpose and has asked IAEA to constantly monitor the same that uranium is for those N reactors that are classifed for Civilian Energy needs.
Now enjoy the excile for some time in pink
