What makes you think Indians wouldnt buy both Russian and American reactors. Russians are the main pushers for this deal

I am sceptical of the nuke deal to tell you the truth. I dont know whether it will be good or bad. There is more to it than is reported in the media.

Me too.

Right now its getting to a point where, its a matter of determining who can extract more from whom without letting go of the deal.

The Indians want no strings-attached deal, which in a way is impractical to even think of. While the Americans want us to side with them. But, then its our non-alignment policy that has brought us so far in 60 years.

All said, we like the Russians better

The problem is Maddy that even the Russians were shying away from giving India fuel and reactors under US pressure. Read up on how the last two reactors that were not made by Russia on account of US pressure. Only the fuel supplies were given because Russia said that they were part of the 'old deal'.

People are very naive on this forum.Russia is IMMENSELY happy with this deal, it allows the flood gates to open for Russia to openly build as many reactors and give fuel as India wants, it no longer has to have a diplomatic head butt with America over this issue. They get the best deal as the Russians are well entrenched in the Indian market and will stand to gain most from this deal.

But its not that, i think it eventually WILL lead to strangulation of our indegenous nuclear research. After 20 years of this deal, Indian politicians will critisize how the Indian research reactors are not 'efficient' and money was being sunk in it and it has been on for a long time without giving the results, especially when foreign reactors are available which are cheaper in the long run...ala the LCA.

I hope you see where i am getting at. This is a lot bigger than what is reported.

If india was going to buy Russian reactors they wouldnt have been negotiating with Americans .

Actually this deal will make it easier for the Russians to sell their commercial reactors to India instead of doing it clandestinely as done in the past. More important it will access to western manufacturers safety equipment which make the reactors much safer. After all India is part of the international fusion experiment to which very countries have been invited.

However now we need to watch whether China will flex its muscles and give Pakistan a similiar deal and will the US allow it to happen.

Dear Munshi,

The NP industry in china is undergoing a vast modernisation though French and American countries with a strict no re-export restrictions so that relationship will be affected. That apart if China did it USA can physically do nothing but It can upset the Chinese by say giving a nuke sub to Japan or couple of more ships and subs to Taiwan.

US would still make noice about it. They have used the ' clean history ' of India;s nuke program as one of the reasons of this offer being made to India.
Pakistan cant claim that for sure. But then US noice wont deter china from doing what it wants. But what tech can China offer to Pakistan?

China cant influence the Nuclear suppliers club and NPT club, while the US can. There is a long way for the Chinese to go before they crack their whip and yell out daddy

An exquisite example of double standards.
If we look into recent history, which is the only nation sofar to have used nukes on two major cities and threatened to initiate nuclear war during Cold War? Who passed the technology to GB and Israel?

In our case its not about the technology, we've proved to be capable of building our own reactors, but its about numbers and bigger plants to meet our growing energy requirements.
China will only supply civil reactors under IAEA safeguard whereas we'll do all possible to design and build heavy water reactors to produce weapon grade plutonium.
