US highlights CAATSA risk in Indian fighter procurement

The United States government has urged India to reconsider its planned acquisition of Russian fighter aircraft, a move that risks potential sanctions under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).

In comments to Janes on 26 June an official from the US Department of State did not make specific reference to the Indian Air Force (IAF) procurement but said that India has not been safeguarded from possible penalties under the law.

The official said, “Without commentating on private diplomatic conversations, I can confirm that we urge all of our allies and partners to forgo transactions with Russia that risk triggering sanctions under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).”

The official added, “While we cannot prejudge whether a specific transaction would result in sanctions, it is important to note that CAATSA does not have any blanket or country-specific waiver provision. “There are strict criteria for considering a waiver, and each transaction is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. The Secretary of State has not made any determination regarding the significance of any transaction involving India.”

US never said that. All it said above was that there is no automatic or country specific waiver for any country in CAATSA act so it is entirely upto to US President and SecOState to determine who gets waiver and who gets sanctions. Thus state dept. officials do not have authority to say who will get waivers or not before hand hence the above statement is only one can they and give and infact They have been saying the exact same thing for nearly 3 years now.

US try to sanction everyone who act against US interest. They are not able to hurt us, they are not able to hurt India. Just tiny nations.

You rat-Indians are the most uneducated lot out there.

There was no "caught with pants down" on 26th. Your IAF was intercepted, you just lobbed your bombs from within 10 mile "no shoot" buffer zone either side of the border airspace. You didn't play according to the rules and disrespected the agreed rules of engagement between our countries.

You endup getting RAPED the next day, in brought day light!

Lollipop to Pakistan.united states is helping India even against china.i don't know why pakistan is not taking tough steps against america.i don't think we need peace in afghanistan.we must drag afghan war as long as possible.

Epic Fail.
Only 10 Su-30 MKIs have crashed (11th one in apr 2012 was a minor accident and plane was repaired).

But we have ordered 12 Su-30 MKIs as that is HALs current production rate (you can check HAL annual reports if you want)

If Indian stops buying Russian weapons, Russia will back China. Indian will lost last leverage to US and become its all weather pawn under China's military pressure. India loses.

Otherwise, US sanction will come. India loses.

It all started from the day when Modi accepted US suggestion to provoke China as part of Indo-Pacific Strategy. The lesson is: Don't tade with devil

Check the crash records...till now only 11 MKI crashed + 01 destroyed by PAF so total 12...No cry me a river but facts are facts.....
