What's new

US going ahead with Pakistan’s mega embassy project despite public resentment .

The question is why does America need such a XXXXL embassy?

It doesn't right to me something is fishy going on.

What can be "fishy" when this embassy has all the necessary approvals and has been vetted by the power centers in Pakistan?

Why is every one acting so weird, have you see OUR embassies in India and China, for example? They are HUGE, and that's just neighbouring countries!

Embassies are scaled according to need.

My father worked as a steno in MoFA and was posted abroad, I was with him when we were posted to Nairobi and Riyadh.

Nairobi was a small embassy, infact it was a cottage converted into a building, because there was nothing major to do. We lived else where and dad drove to office.

But our embassy in Riyadh was BIG. The Embassy building itself was big, then the employee residence, Mosque, Ambassador's house...

It was in a DQ, otherwise, our school would have been incorporated inside too, further increasing size. Our school there was BIG, due to all the OSP expat's children there.

Our missions in Dehli and Beijing have a LOT of departments, since these stations are important and sensitive. We even have a school, playground, dispensary etc in them. They have have teachers, medical staff etc... we even send a gardener there on posting. Then obviously housing, repairman ... you get the scale.

And this is OUR country, poor country, you think a rich country like US, can't afford to build an actual fort, moreover, not HAVE to build one? Have you been sleeping through our geopolitical situation?

Btw, good news, China is ALSO building a huge embassy in Islamabad, so don't worry :D

From what I can see, the embassy grounds are not expanding, they are just doing some new construction inside the old area. They have a pretty big campus with a lot of buildings already. People in Islamabad could go over and have a look...

33°43'31.06" N 73°07'01.82" E in Google Earth

This is a kind of sideways map of the embassy grounds, you can sort of see it in the Google Maps link:

Google Maps

Edit: if you want to see the compound outline, use the Google Maps link, change to "map" (lower left corner) and zoom out just a bit. The compound is tinted pink (in my browser anyhow). The site plan jpg doesn't include a little pointy bit to the north, maybe that is new?

Also FWIW, the PRC has two embassy enclaves. The sum appears to be not quite as large as the US compound, but close. I would guess they are moving from the little one to the big one. Are they keeping the old area as well? anyone know?

Also interesting, the UAE compound is bigger than the Saudi compound. Odd...

Just to clarify, my father was not a diplomat, he was not of officer rank, he was just a stenographer (PA). He didn't have a diplomatic passport or the CD number plate or anything.

I went to Nairobi and Riyadh with him. Nairobi was the best posting by far.

but that depends on the mission most probably whom to appoint as a diplomat. Not necessarily he has to be class one officer I guess.

So how was Nairobi? got any Indian or Pakistani shops?? spices and all?

No actually only people who pass CSS and join as 17 grade officers are eligible to become diplomats.

He was just an ordinary personal assistant. He started at 14 grade and retired at 16 grade.

Nairobi was long ago, '94-'99.

There are many south asians there, sizeable community.

So basically its going to be a huge CIA operational base to spy and interfere in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iran, China and resource rich Central Asia. Don't be surprised if in a decade we will have a Tajik Taliban, Krgyz Taliban. God only knows what other kind of Taliban groups will be founded from this base..
why is army allowing it to happen ?? :pissed:
this is like hitting your own head ... :hitwall:

and i think personal assistants are quite powerful coz they are PA;s to ambassadors or consul. normally as i read on internet.

Well not my father, all he did was type letters and attend phone calls. Greet a dignitary at the airport. Stuff like that.

.
My question is ... WHERE IS THE ARMY ??

.
US must have found it appropriate to build an embassy of this size and Pakistani "establishment" agrees, there is very little what ordinary citizens can do.
