(CNN)The US military's F-35B joint strike fighter conducted its first-ever airstrike on Thursday, according to the US Marine Corps and three US defense officials.

The strike took place in Afghanistan against a fixed Taliban target. The aircraft involved were the US Marine Corps' variant of the aircraft flying from the USS Essex amphibious assault ship.

The Marines confirmed the strike in a statement: "During this mission the F-35B conducted an air strike in support of ground clearance operations, and the strike was deemed successful by the ground force commander."

A historic day!

Hmm they flew over pakistani air space. I hope we are trying our best to track the signals and all sorts of statistics needed. Israel has f-35 india might one day as well. Its good to they are flying in our airspace or near us. Its a good opertunity to measure and test theories and aparatuses.

i wish one crash in Pakistan and we will sell it to china for reverse engineering

The way Pak Baht is, it may not be far fetched!!! If I were the US commander, I would have never allowed that!!! The worst case is what if it lands in the mint condition on a Pak air strip like that Indian jet during ‘65 war or tomahawks or some unknown staffs???!?!? Getting out of the Pak air space in one piece is a feat in itself!!! Ask the Indian/Soviet pilots or SEAL team 6!!!!

Historic day for F35. Hope they use more in afganistan in difficult mountainous terrain areas ,& hideouts of terrorists. It's time for carpet bombing more..

Even F35 entry could not change the ground realities in Afghanistan; despite fielding best of best equipment USA already lost this war and now seeking face saving. What an incompetent administration but think/pose themselves Aristotle of the world.

Bro,

They invaded Afghanistan to eradicate Bin Laden's Al-Qaeda Network and succeeded in this endeavor by 2011. Now, since Afghanistan is a landlocked country where human rights are seemingly non-existent, they continue to utilize Afghanistan as a test bed for new types of weapon systems. Time and again, I have highlighted this reality which some people continue to overlook.

Evidence of American experiments in Afghanistan is "piling up." They have tested different types of hardware and battlefield doctrines in Afghanistan from time-to-time. Afghan Taliban is secondary, and doesn't matter to them in the long-term because it is a localized force.

They are using our bloody air space and land route for US/NATO supply lines.

They have to pay for this $$$. This is not an aid infact royalty money for using our air space and land route. Are they paying for this still ?

More like bad news for us. They were testing RQ-170 surveillance drone in Afghanistan (2007 - 2011) until Operation Neptune Spear materialized out of the blue and took us by surprise.

Nobody even knew about F-35-led operation in Afghanistan until CNN broke the story; could be that it slipped through undetected. Could also be the case that F-35 came with lunesburg radar reflectors in order to give the impression of normal aircraft sortie. Think about the information they are gathering from Pakistan and Iran from time-to-time.

Some days ago, a B-52 bomber unloaded 24 x long-range ALCM on a designated target (a mountain) in Afghanistan with pinpoint accuracy. Firepower, in this case, shook the entire region.

They are testing sophisticated weapons in Afghanistan from time-to-time, and probing regional defenses as added bonus. Pakistan should exert heavy pressure on Afghan Taliban to seek peace with Afghan government so that we can create conditions for American EXIT from Afghanistan.

In another historic day, USA tested tomahawk cruise missiles in Afghanistan - and that was a historic day from Pakistan's stand point as well...

.. not sure about USA but Pakistan will be all eyes to have another historic day from its point of view :D
