WASHINGTON: The United States has expressed confidence that India would implement the tough new United Nations Security Council imposed sanctions against Iran for its alleged clandestine nuclear weapons programme.

"I think India's record on implementation of previous Security Council resolutions has been an admirable one," US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs William Burns told reporters on Thursday.

"And I do expect that India, as its leadership has made clear publicly, will follow through and implement the new resolution," he said when asked if India and the US were on the same page on sanctions against Iran.

India, he noted, has voted three times in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors to hold Iran accountable for its failure to meet its international obligations.

"Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has also reinforced on a number of occasions the fact that India shares international concerns about a nuclear-armed Iran and the obvious negative consequences that would have for a part of the world that's very important to both of us, as well as to the global economy," Burns said.

Manmohan Singh has time and again underlined India's traditional ties with Iran and voiced opposition to sanctions that, in New Delhi's view, end up hurting the common people.

While India believes that a nuclear powered Iran is not in the interests of regional stability, it has consistently advocated dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the issue of the Iranian nuclear programme and supported Tehran's right to peaceful uses of nuclear energy within the purview of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

New sanctions target Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard and include freezing the assets of 40 additional companies and organizations -- 15 linked to the guards, 22 involved in nuclear or ballistic missile activities and three linked to the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines.

The sanctions also bar Iran from pursuing "any activity related to ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons," investing in nuclear-related activities like uranium mining, and buying some categories of heavy weapons, including attack helicopters and missiles.

The Iran issue figured during the recently concluded India-US Strategic Dialogue between team led by External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

well India will not support

what about Pakistan do you have choice

Why bringing in Pakistan ??

Nothing else to do other then derailing the thread ??

The discussion is about India and Iran and India is much closer with more economical relations compared to us, so keep your comments in that scope, if can't then plz don't derail the thread.

.
Once the UN has passed the resolution, it becomes mandatory for every consituent whether in favour or against, to implement the resolution in the spirit as resolved. India as a responsible nation will of course have to implement the resolution like all constituent nations as it is binding.

And to add to the credibility, India has no clandestine or "non-stately" record otherwise in its history.

. .
Let them keep expecting.....we will do wat suits us...;)

Pakistan says UN curbs won't hit Iran gas pipeline

ISLAMABAD: A $.7.6 billion project for export of Iranian natural gas to Pakistan will remain unaffected by the imposition of fresh UN sanctions against Tehran, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.

The UN Security Council imposed a fourth round of sanctions on Iran on Wednesday over its nuclear programme that the West suspects is aimed at developing atomic weapons. Iran denies any such ambitions.

Pakistan said the much-delayed project for the construction of the gas pipeline from Iran was not covered by the UN curbs.

“This resolution or whatever sanctions or restrictions have been imposed are those related to the nuclear or ballistic missile programme of Iran,” Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesman Abdul Basit told a news briefing.

“As far as our gas pipeline project is concerned, that is purely a commercial agreement and is beyond the purview of this resolution.”

The proposed pipeline, which is expected to be completed by 2015, originally would have been extended from Pakistan to its old rival India. However, India has been reluctant to joint the project given its long-running distrust with Pakistan.

The United States tried to discourage India and Pakistan from proceeding with the project but Pakistani officials say the proposed pipeline is crucial to avert a growing energy crisis already causing severe electricity shortages in the country of 170 million. Iranian officials hope to finalise the deal this week.

Pakistan is a key ally in the US-led war against al Qaeda and Taliban and faces a tricky balancing act as it tries to keep strategic ties with the United States while maintaining good relations with its neighbour and fellow Muslim nation.

Basit reiterated Pakistan's call for a “negotiated” settlement of Iran's disputed nuclear programme.

“We will continue to encourage all parties concerned to re-engage and settle differences in the spirit of cooperation and accommodation.

Bhailog India has no trade with Iran in any of the newly included items / institutions. Nothing could be expected to be impacted except for maybe the 3 shipping companies. Trust me Iraninan vessels run a lot aground (happened once with my organizations products too, and the material had to be totally writtedn off - thank god for insurance :D ) so anyway the shipping lines are not so popular. For us it is plain status quo...... so is the case with the Iran Pakistan gas pipeline.

If India doesn't respect and abide by the resolution. It will only show that it doesn't deserve a permanent security council seat.
