10 killed in drone, landmine blast in Pakistan

PESHAWAR: Four militants were killed in a US drone attack in Pakistan's restive northwest tribal region, the second such strike in less than ten days, while five members of an anti-Taliban militia and a security personnel died when their vehicle was hit a landmine in Mohmand agency.

The roadside bomb was exploded near the vehicle of members of the anti-Taliban peace committee at Ghalanai, the centre of Mohmand agency.

The peace committee members were on routine patrolling when came under attack. Five members of the peace committee, including a tribal elder were killed in the incident.

A doctor at the Agency's headquarters hospital said one injured was in critical condition. One security personnel was also among those killed, an official said.

Four militants were killed in a US drone attack in the volatile North Waziristan tribal region of northwest Pakistan, officials said.

The spy planes fired four missiles at a compound and a vehicle in Qutab Khel area, five kilometres from Miranshah, the headquarters of North Waziristan Agency.

Four militants were killed instantly, the officials said. The attack was carried out close to the time for 'iftar', the evening meal for breaking the fast during the Islamic holy month of Ramzan.

Last month, suicide bomber killed nearly 105 people in Mohmand agency. Taliban had claimed responsibility for that attack.

Pakistan government has formed peace committees or 'lashkar' against the Taliban-linked militants. Local tribesmen are members of the committee.

In some areas, these peace committees also take action against the militants. Meanwhile, in another incident, suspected militants blew up a school in the tribal region of Darra Adam Khel.

Two drone attacks in N. Waziristan; 12 dead
By Our Correspondent, Tuesday, 24 Aug, 2010

MIRAMSHAH: At least 12 people, four women among them, were killed and 15 others injured in two drone strikes in parts of the North Waziristan tribal region on Monday.

A US drone fired three missiles on a suspected compound in Dandy Derpakhel area. The missiles also hit a house adjacent to the compound, killing three men and four women and injuring 15 others.

The injured, including children, were taken to hospitals in Miramshah.

Dandy Derpakhel is located near the Afghan border and considered to be a stronghold of the Haqqani network.

The locality has come under drone attacks several times in the past in which relatives of ‘Commander’ Jalaluddin Haqqani were killed.

In the second strike on Monday, five people were killed when two missiles fired by a US drone hit a place in Derga Mandi area.

US Drone strike kills 20 people in Pakistan

MIRANSHAH, Pakistan, Aug 23 (Reuters) - Missiles fired from a U.S. pilotless drone aircraft killed 13 militants and 7 civilians in Pakistan's North Waziristan on Monday, Pakistani intelligence officials said.

They said the missiles were fired at a militant hideout. Most of the militants killed were members of the Afghan Taliban. Four women and three children were among the dead, said the officials.

"The missiles hit a militant compound and a house adjacent to it. We have confirmed reports of 20 dead," said one of the intelligence officials.

Another official said members of the al Qaeda-linked Haqqani network -- one of the most effective militant forces fighting Western troops in Afghanistan -- had been using the compound.

The United States has been pressing ally Pakistan to crack down hard on Afghan Taliban militants who cross the border to Afghanistan to attack U.S.-led NATO forces.

U.S. officials say the drones are a highly effective weapon against militant groups. But civilian casualties in the strikes have angered Pakistanis. (Reporting by Haji Mujtaba and Kamran Haider) (Writing by Michael Georgy; editing by Ralph Boulton)

US drone strike kills four militants in Pakistan

Saturday, 28 Aug, 2010

PESHAWAR: A US drone strike Saturday killed four militants in Pakistan's northwestern tribal belt near the Afghan border, security officials said.

The strike hit Shahidano village in the violence-wracked Kurram tribal district, 100 kilometres (62 miles) southwest of Peshawar.

“Four militants have been killed in this drone attack,” a security official in Peshawar told AFP by telephone.

Another security official in Peshawar said the US drone fired four missiles, hitting two vehicles near a house.

“All those killed were militants of Tehreek-e-Taliban,” the official said.

US drones have mostly targeted North and South Waziristan tribal districts, known hubs for Taliban and Al-Qaeda linked militants.

Kurram is the neighbouring tribal district of Orakzai, the home town of Hakimullah Mehsud, Pakistan's Taliban chief who escaped a US missile attack on January 14 in North Waziristan.

Officials said militants were crossing in two vehicles from Orakzai to Kurram but were hit when they stopped in front of a house.

Both the vehicles were destroyed in the attack, officials said.

Kurram tribal district has for three years been a flashpoint for violence between Shiite and Sunni communities.

US forces have been waging a drone war against Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked commanders in Pakistan's northwestern tribal belt, where militants have carved out havens in mountains outside direct government control..

Waziristan came under renewed scrutiny when Faisal Shahzad, a Pakistani-American charged over an attempted bombing in New York on May 1, allegedly told US interrogators he went to the region for terrorist training.

Al-Qaeda announced in June that its number three leader and Osama bin Laden's one-time treasurer Mustafa Abu al-Yazid had been killed in what security officials said appeared to be a drone strike in North Waziristan. – AFP

4th US missile in 24 hrs in Pakistan kills 5

By ISHTIAQ MAHSUD (AP) – 2 hours ago

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan — A suspected American missile strike killed five alleged militants in northwestern Pakistan early Thursday, an intelligence official said, the fourth such attack in 24 hours.

The barrage of suspected U.S. missiles against houses and a vehicle in the mountains close to the Afghan border was one of the most intense since the attacks were stepped up more than two years ago in a bid to keep pressure on al-Qaida and its allies. Most are believed to be fired from unmanned, remote-controlled planes that can hover for hours above the area.

Also Thursday, 10 people were killed close to the Afghan border in Kurram region when a roadside bomb hit the bus they were traveling in, said local government official Noor Ahmed. It was unclear why — or whether — the vehicle was targeted.

U.S. officials do not publicly acknowledge the missile strikes but have said privately that they have killed several senior Taliban and al-Qaida militants and scores of foot soldiers in a region largely out of the control of the Pakistani state. Critics say innocents are also killed, fueling support for the insurgency.

The latest attack took place before dawn on a house close to a disused match factory a little more than a mile (three kilometers) west of Miran Shah town, a hub for local and international militants in the North Waziristan region, an intelligence official said. He spoke on condition of anonymity in line with the policy of his agency. Five alleged militants were killed, he said.

The three attacks Wednesday also took place in North Waziristan, a lawless region home to al-Qaida leaders plotting attacks in the West, insurgents battling foreign troops just across the border in Afghanistan and extremists behind bombings in Pakistan. There have been at least four other attacks over the last week.

Pakistani intelligence officials working from army bases in North Waziristan have a network of spies who inform them of the attacks. Sometimes journalists are able to speak by phone to villagers who witness them. Pakistan security agencies are believed to cooperate with at least some of the strikes, but there is very little independent reporting of them because the region is so dangerous for outsiders.
The names of those killed are rarely released, and allegations of civilian casualties are not publicly investigated.

The militants have stepped up their own attacks in Pakistan in recent days, just as the army focuses on helping millions of victims from the worst floods in the country's history. Four big bombs have killed at least 135 people in less than a week.

Pakistan's army has launched several offensives in the northwest over the last two years, but has resisted moving into North Waziristan despite U.S. pressure. A major militant faction there, the Haqqani network, is blamed for attacks against U.S. troops in Afghanistan but has refrained from striking inside Pakistan. Analysts believe the army views the network, with which it has historical links, as an important tool to secure its interests in Afghanistan once foreign troops withdraw.

Pakistani: Uzbek warlords killed by drones

Islamabad, 9 Sept. (AKI) - By Syed Saleem Shahzad - Top Uzbek warlords and their bases which provide training to the European fighters were killed in the last four suspected US predator drone attacks over the past 24 hours in Pakistani North Waziristan region, well placed sources told AKI.

A total of at least five people were reported killed in the latest attack on Thursday in the northwest Pakistani tribal belt.

The most prominent target in the series of drone attacks was the renowned Uzbek commander whose is renowned in the region with his Jihadi nom de guerre Qureshi.

He came under attack at 12:30 pm Wednesday in the area of Digan, the Data Khel region of the North Waziristan.

Qureshi was associated with the Islamic Jihad Union. He used to receive foreigners especially the Germans in North Waziristan and then train them and resend them to their country of origins.

At 10:30 am yesterday a drone attacked Dande Darpa Khel in the North Waziristan. The targeted compound belonged to Pakistani militants of Laskhar-e-Jhangvi and the Uzbek militants.

Another target was Laskhar-e-Jhangvi in the North Waziristan while Thursday's pre-dawn target were seven Uzbek militants at the Match manufacturing factory near Miranshah.

The US declines to publicly claim responsibility for drone missile strikes in Pakistan, but officials have said privately that they have killed several senior Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants.

America's use of unmanned aircraft in Pakistan is publicly called a violation of sovereignty by the country's government and military officials. Reports say their reaction is for local consumption and in private support such strikes.

Pakistani officials said three drone strikes killed at least 15 people in North Waziristan on Wednesday, a stronghold for Taliban and Al-Qaida-linked militants, according to a report on the web site of US-government sponsored Voice of America radio.
