China has ordered the closure of the US consulate in the south-western city of Chengdu, the latest in a tit-for-tat escalation between the two countries.

China said the move was a "necessary response" to the US, who ordered China to close its consulate in Houston earlier this week.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the US decision was taken because China was "stealing" intellectual property.

Tensions have been rising between the US and China over several key issues.

The closure was a "legitimate and necessary response to the unreasonable actions taken by the United States", China's foreign ministry said in a statement.

"The current situation between China and the United States is something China does not want to see, and the US bears all responsibility for that."

The US consulate in Chengdu, which was established in 1985 and currently has more than 200 members of staff, is strategically important because of its proximity to Tibet, correspondents say.

Earlier this week, the US government informed China that it had by the end of the week to close its consulate in Houston, Texas.

Mr Pompeo said the Chinese Communist Party was stealing "not just American intellectual property... but European intellectual property too... costing hundreds of thousands of jobs".

"We are setting out clear expectations for how the Chinese Communist Party is going to behave. And when they don't, we're going to take actions," he said.

The Chinese consulate in Houston was one of five in the US, along with the embassy in Washington DC. It was not clear why it was singled out.

China reacted with anger, with its foreign ministry spokeswoman saying the reasons given by the US for closing the consulate were "unbelievably ridiculous".

Hua Chunying urged the US to reverse its "erroneous decision", or China would "react with firm countermeasures".

President Donald Trump's administration has clashed repeatedly with Beijing over trade and the coronavirus pandemic, as well as China's imposition of a controversial new security law in Hong Kong.

Europe australia should close chinese consulates in their countries now .

. . . .
The white man is very angry, again. He is out of control. His anger is aimed at anyone who he believes is spoiling his established order. He is acting irrationally and emotionally. His little poodle India is also barking from the sidelines, but it can do little.

.
They are mad because China is rounding up U.S. terrorists and U.S. spies and shutting down the money flow to U.S. trained terrorists and agent provocateurs. So they try to take revenge going for Chinese diplomats and civilians.

.
The master already instructed them to buy US branded goods made in China instead of Chinese branded goods made on China. Both are from the same factory btw. Lol
Interesting. Colonel Babu must be angry.

"China reacted with anger, with its foreign ministry spokeswoman saying the reasons given by the US for closing the consulate were "unbelievably ridiculous".

Hua Chunying urged the US to reverse its "erroneous decision", or China would "react with firm countermeasures"."

Hua is level headed . I doubt she showed anger. BBC is tabloid now.

Well of course, you don't close consulates based on spy charges, US embassies are used for spying since God knows when.

No matter what they say, the Chinese are extremely nervous and worried about their governments actions and the anticipated isolation that will lead to unprecedented economic downsides for China. The economy is built on exports, of which America is the greatest consumer..when 1 factory closes, hundreds of workers and dozens of salaried executives lose their livelihood.. We will see a large portion of these factories close down as markets reduce dependecy on Chinese manufacturing. No amount of sweatshops or slave labor or low price deals can save China now.. With Covid19 and its aftermath, bullying and assertive attitude of the CCP we will witness the downfall of CCP.

China tried to bully India into co-operating and supporting the belt and road initiative but this behavior has completely boomeranged into the greatest foreign relations crysis for China with no end in sight as all passive nations are coming to recognize China as a global bully with selfish interests hiding in all its dealings.

CCPs tough words cannot hide the trembling voice behind these words.. And the Chinese VPN using illegal memberse jealousy driven troll posts also indicate the deep seated fears that the Chinese consciousness is experiencing this very moment.

I think closing the consulate in chengdu is an appropriate response by PRC.
USA is trying to push china to a corner. China shouldn't cower to USA pressure.

Escalations in US-China conflict will lead to repercussions in the economic state of the world.
And developing countries like India and Brazil will be affected badly by that; more so than china or usa.

Besides this is a classic case of usa bullying china. After china is done, their next target will be india. Just like for dismantling soviet union they used the prc (they appeased the ccp by recognizing prc in unsc instead of roc, pouring in money into prc etc); now they will use india and other countries to do the same for prc.
Btw if china can be done by the usa, india will be a piece of cake for the americans esp. since western agents are in power in india right now and they will internally weaken india to the max before they leave.

I disagree with you and several assumptions which you are making.

As China loses its most important market it will scurry to pick up whatever leftovers it can find throughout the world in order to utilize its underutilized manufacturing capacity, and in fact it will benefit all players who are still interested in dealing with China.

India will benefit as large companies relocate their manufacturing bases to India, and this will greatly impact the manufacturing capability of India in a very positive way.

In the short term, all countries who have a dependency on Chinese products will suffer a impact but this is no more harmful than the bitter pill that physician gives you when you are sick. In the long run, markets will settle down and new alternatives will be found. Consumer prices might go up but it will be beneficial for everyone in the long run.

After China, US next target will be India:which maybe a fair assumption but we are still a very long way from this scenario. As long as China holds this stance and threatens global peace, a strong and secure India will always be needed to balance it, and if ever we see a day when the US is concerned about India's rising prowess - it will be a day when more than billion Indians have entered the Middle class and India has surpassed 10 trillion dollars in nominal GDP - which will still be a better position to be in under any circumstances.
