Pakistan is officially designated Major non NATO ally, big thing? When was the last time we got any preferential treatment from US?

Well, Pakistan can buy high-tech weaponary from the US if it wants and also it can get hold of excess US military material.

When the US drew down after the surge in Afghanistan, Pakistan was offered to take remaining US equipment as much as it possibly could transfer to Pakistan but Pakistan had to finance that transfer by itself or the equipment will be scrapped.

So Pakistan ended up with free military equipment from Afghanistan and Iraq earlier where Pakistan was not even fighting.

The United States has handed over hundreds of its military equipment including aircraft, trainer jets and armoured vehicles to Pakistan.

According to US Congress’s Congressional Research Service the equipment were previously used by American forces in Afghanistan and Iraq.

As per a report published by Pakistan’s Dawn news agency the equipment handed over include 14 combat aircraft, 59 military trainer jets and 374 armoured vehicles.

After the United States started pulling out troops from Afghanistan it offered some military equipment to its allies including Afghanistan and Pakistan to use them in battle against terrorism in the region.

These weapons are classified under “Excessive Defence Articles”, i.e. equipment used by the US forces, which can be supplied to allied nations at withdrawal instead of shipping them back to the United States.

Afghan parliament members had previously requested that the United States should leave all of its military-equipment in Afghanistan which is used by their soldiers here.

Afghan MPs reasoned that Afghan security forces need to be well equipped in order to overcome the challenges especially at the time foreign troops are leaving the country.
