US backs India on UNSC seat despite Syria vote

Should I take it as they are against? What are you talking man?

Here, I'll make it simple.

1) China has made no official statement saying that it supports India for a permanent seat at the UNSC
2) No P5 member has said that it supports India for "veto power" in the UNSC
3) You need unanimous support from the P5, and 2/3 supermajority in the general assembly.

So without ALL the P5 members, voting in favour of allowing India to become a permanent member, you won't get it.

Do you have explicit support from all the P5 members? No, not from China.

And I very much doubt you can get a 2/3 supermajority, when even the entire G4 could barely even scrape together 80 pledges of commitment from the general assembly members.

I think I know this.

So what happens if you ditch Japan, and China still doesn't support it?

That would be quite unfortunate for you guys.

We don't ditch people. We don't tell other countries which we really don't mean.

.
Yeah yeah really unfortunate
BTW who told you we are going to ditch japs ( dude we are not yankees ) anyways India's not just supporting japs but whole G4

LOL, Japan's entry to the UNSC is opposed by China, Russia and South Korea. Two veto members.

The chances of any grouping that includes Japan getting permanent seats is non-existant.

Nothing personal against them, it is just that Japan will echo the USA's line, and that would put the entire UNSC in America's pocket, even more than it already is.

I wonder if Indians really have such low self esteem that they cannot stop talking about UNSC? It doesn't matter in 21st century.

A very astute and correct observation. What is the UNSC really worth in today's world? Well it may mean a lot to countries like Lybia, Syria or Iran or Iraq or Somalia or North Korea on whom the collective coercive will of certain like minded nations if imposed, will certainly add to their problems, much to their dismay. Does India fall in that category? I think not. We abstained against intervention in Syria, didn't we? Earlier we had abstained against military intervention in Libya. Both were correct decisions. India today is not under the mercy of any UNSC veto power wielding nation. If the permanent membership comes to us along with veto power in due course, fine. If not, why shed tears? Instead, India can cooperate with other like minded nations to ensure that the veto power becomes obsolete and collective coercive military actions against nations, a thing of the past. There is a lot more to the UN charter than military coercion.

The United Nations is the organization responsible for International Law.

It is also the largest international organization on the planet, and contains every single internationally recognized nation in the world. The P5 comprise the global high table.

Which of course is the reason why the Indian government is so desperate to join.

.
Also Japan. :)

Japan definitely has more merit, than most countries I can think of.

The problem is that they have a "pacifist constitution", as a result of their defeat in WW2. Their constitution prevents them from even making the "threat" of force towards any other country.

What use is that in a "Security" council? The Security council members all have powerful militaries, and marks of military prestige like ICBM's. The Security council is tasked with defending global peace, you can't do that with a pacifist constitution.

Japan's economy is very impressive though. Even though it has been stagnant for 20 years, it still managed to retain the title of 2nd largest economy on Earth until very recently.

But at the end of the day, they will be vetoed by China and/or Russia, because they will simply echo America's position on every issue. They don't have any real chance of getting in.

@Chinese-Dragon- As much as I hate to admit it, I agree with and understand what you're saying about the whole "way of politics" thing. Honestly, as the current situation stands, the Chinese ARE playing it really smart. Wait and see what the strategic advantages/disadvantages are of supporting India, and then act in due time. Sheisty and smart...:/

I personally is highly critical of my Govt for wasting time and energy after the UNSC seat. There are far better things to do than this.

Who in this present world gives a flying f*** about resolutions passed in UN. UNSC can only pass resolutions against militarily weaker nations that P5 is sure of taking down & also stand to gain from its downfall and if countries have godfathers in the big table (like Israel has USA )they don't even give a damn. Even African warlords no longer care about UN let alone powerful sovereign country like India .

I think that the time has come for UN to reassess and reorganize or become obsolete like its predecessor- League of nations.

Unlikely.

The P5 and their allies make up most of the political power on Earth. Even just the two nations of America and Russia, have more "diplomatic" power than any other organization could dream of.

The UN also contains every single recognized nation on the planet.
