In a new move against Iranian scientists, the United States has arrested Iranian professor Mojtaba Atarodi for alleged buying of high-tech US lab equipment.

The 54-year-old scientist is being held in a federal prison in California.

He is a microchip expert and assistant professor at Tehran's prestigious Sharif University of Technology. He is the author or coauthor of dozens of scientific papers dealing with microchip technology.

Atarodi was detained on December 7 after stepping off a plane in Los Angeles.

He has been reportedly charged for violating US exports law by buying the lab equipment.

But why did he fly to USA in the first place?
he went in USA because his brother is terribly sick and he got a visa to see him
a student Iranian radio outside Iran (i forgot where they are) said he was arrested just after he arrived in USA so he didn't have time to buy anything
i will put the link if you want

. .
Double standard of USA, when pakistan was getting nukes and missile it kept quite but now ranting about Iran's efforts that too through indigenous means.

But Iran can overcome these problems.

Best of luck to the brother Iran.

Long live India-Iran friendship.

But why did he fly to USA in the first place?

because he had family their he was visiting.
Do people have to have a reason to visit the US? Should he come to you and ask permission Cheng or is the US of A only for people like you?
He has been arrested for no reason but a tit for tat situation. Jeeeez how dumb are the US?

bbc persian is saying he was arrested immediately in USA so he couldn't buy anything (still this is just bbc persian saying this now)

I see; that would explain the personal nature of the visit.

Visits are fine; but for purposes of buying embargoed goods, there are better ways than a visit by a scientist, right?

That was my point.

He hasn't visited the USA without a visa. So why the USA has given a visa to him at the first place if, according to you, he has to have other reasons than personal reasons to visit the USA?

I hope the US court would find him innocent because as I read in the news and Hussein said too he hadn't had the time to buy any embargoed goods and send them to Iran.

Exactly correct. Let's wait for the indictment to see what evidence of wrongdoing can be presented that will stand up to legal scrutiny.

ROUND AND ROUND AGAIN.Why do you never add to a thread - why do you always say lets wait and see? Why?

There was this village boy who gets a horse on his 14th birthday

Everybody in the village says; "What a wonderful gift"

The Zen master says "We'll see"

A year later, the boy falls off the horse and breaks his leg.

Everyone in the village says; "How terrible that the boy is suffering"

The Zen master says, "We'll see"

A war is on the horizon and the boy isn't sent off to fight on account of his injured leg.

Everybody in the village exclaim "How lucky this boy is !!!"

The Zen master says "We'll see......"

I think you catch the drift.

This is the infinite loop on the argument that you keep tapping into for your posts and at the end of the ordeal you come off as the wise Zen master and poor ol' me as the village imbecile who didn't know any better than to pick sides.Pretty much pointless to argue against until you define just where your line in the sand is...bugging out!!!

The US are bang out of order for arresting this guy when his brother is clearly ill and on humanitarian grounds they are clearly taking the p*ss.

He has a visa on humanitarian grounds; if he was arrested, that warrant must also have a basis to it. The procedure that is to be followed will present that evidence in court. In order to judge whether it was right or wrong, one has to wait for that evidence to be presented.

That is why I said let's wait and see. Anything else would be premature at this point. I hope you can understand that.
