US Army JAG visits IM Nagpur India
Nagpur, July 12 (IBNS) A high level four membered delegation of the United States Army led by the Judge Advocate General (JAG) of US Army, Lieutenant General Dana K Chipman visited the Institute of Military Law (IML) at Kamptee Nagpur on Thursday.
The team was accompanied by Maj Gen PS Rathore, the JAG of Indian Army.
The purpose of the visit is to interact with JAG branch/legal officers of the Indian Armed Forces to share ideas, lessons learned and discuss training related exchanges between the two countries.
The Institute of Military Law is a premier Institution of Ministry of Defence which imparts training to officers of legal departments of Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, BSF and to officers of various friendly foreign countries in the field of military and allied laws.
Speaking to the officers at IML during his visit, Lt Gen Dana K Chipman said, Training at IML is very impressive because of the range of different themes and legal aspects taught here. The teaching out-put and the outreach is excellent.
The publications brought out by the institute are particularly good. It appears that the hand selected faculties here are committed to excellence.
Commenting on the Indian Military Judicial System, Lt Gen Chipman said, It has far more similarities with our judicial system in terms of commitment to justice, maintenance of good order and discipline, up keep of rights of accused and principles of Natural justice.
Maj Gen PS Rathore who took over the charge of JAG of Indian Army on 18 Feb 2012 has been the Commandant of IML earlier in his legal career.
He said, "Both the countries stand to benefit from such interactions and exchange programmes. The US Army has a rich experience of operating in different parts of the world. While we too have our experiences of the peace keeping missions etc. Learning from their experiences and sharing ours would be mutually beneficial.
Appreciating the training infrastructure developed at the IML, he said, The training-field of training our officers is now ever spreading into vast expanse of cyber laws and the international humanitarian laws. The IML is well equipped for the task.
The visiting US Army JAG, Lt Gen Chipman hails from Louisiana and was commissioned in 1980 from west point. He later earned the degree of Juris Doctor from Stanford Law School.
In the year 2001-02, he was deployed as the legal advisor to Joint Special Operations Task Force for Operation Enduring Freedom.
In his earlier prestigious assignments, he was a Senior Litigation Attorney in the US Army Litigation Division.
The US delegations visit concludes on Friday.
