US arms supply and fresh military aid to Pakistan has gained momentum in the last one year.

WASHINGTON: US arms supply and fresh military aid to Pakistan has quietly gained momentum in the last one year, Congressional sources have said.

The Pentagon, according to publicly available documents, reports total Foreign Military Sales (FMS) agreements with Pakistan worth about $5.2 billion for the period between FY2002 and FY2012.

The resumption of US military aid to Pakistan is seen as a sign of normalisation of military-to-military ties between the US and Pakistan that had hit rock bottom after the killing of Osama bin Laden by US forces in Abbottabad in May 2011.

Sources said the notable developments over the past one year include delivery of 150 additional radio sets, completed upgrades on 35 Pak F-16s, and imminent delivery of 374 M113 armored personnel carriers as Excess Defense Articles in April 2014.

Sales of F-16 combat aircraft and related equipment account for about half of this.

Congress has appropriated more than $3 billion in Foreign Military Financing (FMF) for Pakistan since 2001, more than $2 billion of which has been disbursed.

These funds are used to purchase US military equipment for longer-term modernisation efforts.

Pakistan has also been granted US defence supplies as Excess Defense Articles (EDA), said Congressional sources familiar with the issue.

Major post-2001 defence supplies provided, or soon to be provided, under FMF include: eight P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft and their refurbishment (valued at $474 million, of which four have been delivered and three of which were destroyed in a 2011 attack by Islamist militants).

They also include at least 5,750 military radio sets ($212 million); 2,007 TOW anti-armor missiles ($186 million); six AN/TPS-77 surveillance radars ($100 million); and six C-130E Hercules transport aircraft and their refurbishment ($76 million).

Other items are the Perry-class missile frigate USS McInerney, via special EDA authorisation ($65 million for refurbishment; now the PNS Alamgir); and 20 AH-1F Cobra attack helicopters via EDA ($48 million for refurbishment, of which 12 have been delivered).

US arms supply to Pakistan on the rise - The Economic Times

total nonsense article by indian paper. misleading headline

I don't see any rise , it was merely a fill void in 90's due to sanctions , we had to have modest upgrades to F16 fleet

We have not seen a substantial addition or new purchase , but hopefully something decent will come thru the partnership programs

  • We got few upgrades on C130 , India was given Brand new Transport planes
  • We got few Orions P3 , India was given P8 Posiden Technology
  • We got few F16 Kits, India was given offes for Best version of F16 ever built
  • We got 1 OHP frigate , India mean while got a Air Craft carrier from Russia
  • We got no nuclear dea , India was offered Nuclear deal

Our economy suffered damages of 80 Billion dollars between 2000-2012
we only got mere 2-3 Billion dollar in aid , rest was all "Loans"

  • It would be sufficent "strategic cooperation" if US had given us TOT on Cobra or may be 60 Super Cobras
  • It would be "strategic cooperation" if we were given TOT on drones when we asked for it
  • It would be sufficient "strategic cooperation" if US had given us 2 Destroyers
  • It would be sufficient "strategic cooperation" if US had offered us Nuclear technology

The recent annoucement of Excess stuff from Afganistan for Pakistani Military is good move in right direction but more cooperation is needed in technology and defence sector

A strategic cooperation would be

a) 30 F16 Block 60 for Pakistan Forces , thru coalition force upgrade program etc
b) 2 Destroyers and 10 Frigates for Pakistan Navy
c) TOT on Cobra Gunships or 80 Super Cobra gunships
d) Knowledge share on space programs or invite to participate
f) New variants of Transport planes C130
g) Offer of Hornets for Pakistan Navy
h) Invite for Military Training programs

Clearly more is expected from American counter parts the cooperation is just not there on the levels it should be present

Any chances of US to help PAA in getting ex-AH-1s from other countries that estimates about 200+ being operated. If all of these can come to PAA with Upgrade then they can easily fight terrorist in a better way. Also some additional Bell-407, Bell-412, Bell UH-1 Huey and Black Hawks.

Also any chances of getting some additional P-3Cs like having a fleet of about 25 P-3Cs MPA and 5 P-3Cs AEW&Cs. Also getting some a good deal of OHPs from US like additional 14-15 OHPs with US upgrade plan.

More over, getting some remaining 14 F-16s from US and also buying some more Block-15s from US inventory as well.

America is blood sucking monster animal in friend disguise....for Pakistan and open arm darling for india.
Never ever believe all these are same against us... as advised 1500 years in advance.

US can buy 250 AH-1s operational world wide for PAA and also supply some additional from their storage for spares... I am sure this will help PAA to maintain a fleet of 250++ AH-1s...

Whatever it is they are old. Pak Defence is looking for something equivalent to Apaches with strong fire power & so on.
Show me the money!! :azn: US is not China that would give you military equipment at concessional rates!
