US apologises to APJ Abdul Kalam for frisking incident

NEW DELHI: The US has apologised to former President APJ Abdul Kalam for subjecting him to frisking at New York's JFK Airport, an incident that had provoked sharp reactions from India which threatened retaliatory action.

In a written apology to Kalam and the Indian government, the US said, "Appropriate procedure for expedited screening of dignitaries had not been followed".

"We deeply regret the inconvenience that resulted for him (Kalam) as a result of the September 29 incident involving the security screening at JFK Airport in New York," a statement from the US Embassy here said, noting that it had the utmost respect for Kalam.

They also said that US was actively working to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

Taking serious note of the incident, India had threatened retaliatory action with external affairs minister SM Krishna directing Indian ambassador to US Nirupama Rao to take up the matter in writing at the "highest level" with Washington.

The US said that subsequent to the frisking incident, US Charge d' Affairs Peter Burleigh personally hand delivered a letter from the US transportation security administrator to Kalam and a similar letter was delivered to the government of India regretting the incident.

Maintaining that it "deeply values and appreciates" the strong relationship and partnership with India, the US said, "We are confident that despite this regrettable incident, we will continue working closely with India in the many areas of our strategic partnership".

80-year-old Kalam was frisked in New York on September 29 before boarding an Air India flight.

Sources said that even after Kalam had taken his seat in the aircraft, the US security personnel forced the crew to open the door and took away the jacket and boots of the former president to check for explosives since they had forgotten to do so before his boarding. The items were later return

I don't get it why do they send him there everytime to be insulted? The man is far far more superior in caliber. Rather than complaining, how about having foreign delegates frisked as well? That'd put the mood proper.

US ex president Bush was here last week. We could have frisked him in Mumbai airport

So.. some people's celebration is short lived ;)

Some people who argued so much to downgrade India on whole, may look other way now. All that they need is mental mastrurbation and this news will not provide them that opportunity :P

Try to look at it with a different point of view. Those at TSA have a database of names. When they run a name, and it shows up, they are to frisk the person - no matter what. The person in question, whose name/similar name, comes up can escape such frisking only if that person were boarding a private jet, or were accompanied by those on official visits. Their checking of Kalam is certainly out of protocol, and is in very bad taste, but it does not mean that they frisked our most celebrated president just to humiliate Indians.

They have done similar things with just as prestigious American statesmen, because those statesmen were taking a normal flight like a common man.

The guilty party is not the TSA, rather those who failed to inform the TSA that our former president was on move and should be taken care of.

I am not even ruling out a mischief on part some employee or something on that line. But we should not blame the entire nation, because in issuing the apology, it is the US that had to bow down and was humiliated in the end. Why would they do something on purpose that would make them appear of lower standards?

US ex president Bush was here last week. We could have frisked him in Mumbai airport

We could have, but we did not, because we ought to define, and maintain, our own standards and lead others into following us. Why should we lower our own standards and follow others?

Agree with @President Camacho statement.

Insane statement by @indocarib as i know former president Bush one of the very few president of America who really cared and gave India deserving attention. So frisking him or people from his lobby at US senate, is stupid.

Plus don't forget millions of Indians staying in US. here i see some people complain color of skin or racism.... all useless.

Its as simple as... India is now not economically and military strong enough... We Germans are in same boat we are not in position to questions to USA as-well.

They day India will be close to US in economic and military strength, you will see change in attitude

Now in case of China attitude has started changing slowly. So i guess Indians have to wait another 10 to 20 years, and grow as its growing now... and better days are ahead...
